HHCL (formally Howell Henry Chaldecott Lury and Partners) was an advertising agency based in London. The agency devised campaigns for Tango, including the '' Orange Man'' commercial in 1991, and ''St George'', for Blackcurrant Tango, in 1997. In 1994, it created the ''Does exactly what it says on the tin'' campaign for Ronseal. The firm was voted 'Agency of the Decade' by ''Campaign'' magazine in 2000. After mergers and a name change to United London, the agency closed in the beginning of 2007. History Howell Henry Chaldecott Lury & Partners was founded by Rupert Howell, Steve Henry, Axel Chaldecott, Adam Lury and Robin Price and launched on October 17, 1987. HHCL was bought by Chime PLC in October 1997, and merged into the Red Cell Network in January 2002. The HHCL initials were dropped and the agency became United London in January 2006, before being closed down by its owner WPP Group in the beginning of 2007. Orange Man (advertisement)
''Orange Man'' is a British television advertisement for the soft drink Tango Orange. Created by advertising agency HHCL (Howell Henry Chaldecott Lury and Partners), a longtime collaborator of Tango. The advertisement was produced in 1991 and aired in 1992, and was the first in the brand's "You Know When You've Been Tango'd" campaign that would continue until 1996 before returning for several years in the 2000s. The advertisement features an orange man slapping a Tango drinker across the cheeks as a metaphor for tasting Tango, and was intended as a reaction against the norm of "cause and effect" television advertising at the time was largely focused on scenarios where people's lives were improved by the product being advertised. "It does exactly what it says on the tin" was originally an advertising slogan in the United Kingdom, which then became a common idiomatic phrase. It colloquially means that the name of something is an accurate description of its qualities. It is akin to the previously existing phrases "by name and by nature" and "it lives up to its name". It originated in a series of television advertisements by the woodstain and wood-dye manufacturer Ronseal, initiated in 1994 and still being broadcast in advertisements and online media .
