HŽ Series 2043
Series 2043 is a diesel-electric locomotive series on Croatian Railways ( hr, hrvatske željeznice, HŽ). With the electrification of magistral railway lines the need has arisen that diesel locomotives are put into service on less frequently used lines. Usually lesser axle load is allowed on a branch line and less frequented lines. A locomotive, which was light and powerful enough was needed. Therefore, the series 2061 was stripped down and series 2043 was created. All six locomotives were taken out of service, the last one in 2011. With this the most weight was lost. Now, the adhesion is distributed differently. Progress Rail Locomotives, doing business as Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD), is an American manufacturer of diesel-electric locomotives, locomotive products and diesel engines for the rail industry. A V16 engine is a sixteen-cylinder piston engine where two banks of eight cylinders are arranged in a V configuration around a common crankshaft. V16 engines are less common than engines with fewer cylinders, such as V8 and V12 engines. Each bank of a V16 engine can be thought of as a straight-8, a design that can be inherently balanced. The diesel engine, named after Rudolf Diesel, is an internal combustion engine in which ignition of the fuel is caused by the elevated temperature of the air in the cylinder due to mechanical compression; thus, the diesel engine is a so-called compression-ignition engine (CI engine). This contrasts with engines using spark plug-ignition of the air-fuel mixture, such as a petrol engine (gasoline engine) or a gas engine (using a gaseous fuel like natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas). A diesel locomotive is a type of railway locomotive in which the prime mover (locomotive), prime mover is a diesel engine. The EMD G16 is a diesel locomotive built by General Motors in the US and under licence by Clyde Engineering in Australia and MACOSA in Spain.
