Hypostomus Plecostomus
''Hypostomus plecostomus'', also known as the suckermouth catfish or the common pleco, is a tropical freshwater fish belonging to the armored catfish family (Loricariidae), named for the longitudinal rows of armor-like scutes that cover the upper parts of the head and body (the lower surface of head and abdomen is naked soft skin). Although the name ''Hypostomus plecostomus'' is often used to refer to common plecostomus sold in aquarium shops, most are actually members of other genera. Suckermouth catfish are of little or no value as a food fish, although they are at least occasionally consumed over their native range. A demand exists for them, however, as a bottom cleaner in the aquarium trade. Distribution and habitat This species' native range is tropical northeastern South America; it naturally occurs in northeastern Brazil, the Guianas, and Trinidad and Tobago. Confusingly, the name ''Hypostomus plecostomus'' (or ''Plecostomus plecostomus'') has sometimes been incorrectly ... Commewijne River
Commewijne River (Sranan Tongo: ''Kawina-liba'') is a river in northern Suriname. It originates in the hills of the Commewijne District and flows northwards until it receives the meandering Cottica River from the right and then runs westward until it unites with the south–north running Suriname River at Nieuw Amsterdam. Here, after some it enters the Atlantic Ocean. It has a river basin of . The Commewijne was important historically for navigation: ocean-going ships navigated the river huge barges with bauxite were transported from Moengo in the east to the confluence with the Surinam river and from there traveled southward via Paramaribo to the Paranam refinery and to Trinidad and the USA. Floats with tropical hardwood were also brought to Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname. Nowadays, the Moengo bauxite is depleted and the hardwood is mostly transported by trucks. The ocean-going ships were trading the river as late as 1986. There remains quite some boat trafficking with loc ... Hemiancistrus
''Hemiancistrus'' is a genus of suckermouth armored catfishes. These species are native to South America. The taxonomy of this genus is complex and unclear, and major work has to be done. Many of these fish are popular aquarium fish. Taxonomy ''Hemiancistrus'' is a genus within the tribe Ancistrini of the subfamily Hypostominae. This genus has long been used as a "dump" for Loricariid species; fish with unclear relationships have been classified as members of this genus. As such, this taxon is not monophyletic. At this point, many undescribed species remain. This genus and the closely related ''Peckoltia'' may be synonymous, as neither genus is supported by synapomorphies. ''Hemiancistrus'' species differ from other members of the ''Panaque'' clade lacking the synapomorphies of the other genera and having the dentaries meeting at an angle greater than 120°; in ''Peckoltia'' species, the dentaries meet at less than 90° Generally, ''Peckoltia'' are considered to be those that h ... Hypoxia (environmental)
Hypoxia refers to low oxygen conditions. Normally, 20.9% of the gas in the atmosphere is oxygen. The partial pressure of oxygen in the atmosphere is 20.9% of the total barometric pressure. In water, oxygen levels are much lower, approximately 7 ppm or 0.0007% in good quality water, and fluctuate locally depending on the presence of photosynthetic organisms and relative distance to the surface (if there is more oxygen in the air, it will diffuse across the partial pressure gradient). Atmospheric hypoxia Atmospheric hypoxia occurs naturally at high altitudes. Total atmospheric pressure decreases as altitude increases, causing a lower partial pressure of oxygen, which is defined as hypobaric hypoxia. Oxygen remains at 20.9% of the total gas mixture, differing from hypoxic hypoxia, where the percentage of oxygen in the air (or blood) is decreased. This is common in the sealed burrows of some subterranean animals, such as blesmols. Atmospheric hypoxia is also the basis of altitude tra ... Crustacean
Crustaceans (Crustacea, ) form a large, diverse arthropod taxon which includes such animals as decapods, seed shrimp, branchiopods, fish lice, krill, remipedes, isopods, barnacles, copepods, amphipods and mantis shrimp. The crustacean group can be treated as a subphylum under the clade Mandibulata. It is now well accepted that the hexapods emerged deep in the Crustacean group, with the completed group referred to as Pancrustacea. Some crustaceans (Remipedia, Cephalocarida, Branchiopoda) are more closely related to insects and the other hexapods than they are to certain other crustaceans. The 67,000 described species range in size from '' Stygotantulus stocki'' at , to the Japanese spider crab with a leg span of up to and a mass of . Like other arthropods, crustaceans have an exoskeleton, which they moult to grow. They are distinguished from other groups of arthropods, such as insects, myriapods and chelicerates, by the possession of biramous (two-parted) limbs, and by th ... Aquatic Plant
Aquatic plants are plants that have adapted to living in aquatic environments (saltwater or freshwater). They are also referred to as hydrophytes or macrophytes to distinguish them from algae and other microphytes. A macrophyte is a plant that grows in or near water and is either emergent, submergent, or floating. In lakes and rivers macrophytes provide cover for fish, substrate for aquatic invertebrates, produce oxygen, and act as food for some fish and wildlife. Macrophytes are primary producers and are the basis of the food web for many organisms. They have a significant effect on soil chemistry and light levels as they slow down the flow of water and capture pollutants and trap sediments. Excess sediment will settle into the benthos aided by the reduction of flow rates caused by the presence of plant stems, leaves and roots. Some plants have the capability of absorbing pollutants into their tissue. Seaweeds are multicellular marine algae and, although their ecologi ... Algae
Algae (; singular alga ) is an informal term for a large and diverse group of photosynthetic eukaryotic organisms. It is a polyphyletic grouping that includes species from multiple distinct clades. Included organisms range from unicellular microalgae, such as ''Chlorella,'' ''Prototheca'' and the diatoms, to multicellular forms, such as the giant kelp, a large brown alga which may grow up to in length. Most are aquatic and autotrophic (they generate food internally) and lack many of the distinct cell and tissue types, such as stomata, xylem and phloem that are found in land plants. The largest and most complex marine algae are called seaweeds, while the most complex freshwater forms are the ''Charophyta'', a division of green algae which includes, for example, ''Spirogyra'' and stoneworts. No definition of algae is generally accepted. One definition is that algae "have chlorophyll ''a'' as their primary photosynthetic pigment and lack a sterile covering of cells around thei ... Pterygoplichthys Multiradiatus
''Pterygoplichthys multiradiatus'' is one of several tropical fish commonly known as Orinoco sailfin catfish, plecostomus (or plecos). It belongs to the armored catfish family (Loricariidae). Named for its sail-like dorsal fin, the part of its scientific name ''multiradiatus'' means "many-rayed" and refers to the rays of the dorsal fin. ''P. multiradiatus'' is one of a number of species commonly referred to as the common pleco by aquarists. Other scientific names that were used (as synonyms) for ''P. multiradiatus'' include ''Hypostomus multiradiatus'', ''Ancistrus multiradiatus'', and ''Liposarcus multiradiatus''. ''P. multiradiatus'' is sometimes confused with ''Pterygoplichthys pardalis'', which is a different species of pleco. ''P. multiradiatus'' goes by a number of common names. It can be called the "long-fin armored catfish" in Hawaii, "sailfin catfish", "sailfish catfish", "many-rayed (multiradiatus) pleco" or "radiated ptero" in the United States, 多輻翼甲鯰 in Manda ... Pterygoplichthys Disjunctivus
''Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus'', commonly known as the vermiculated sailfin catfish, is a species of catfish in the family Loricariidae. It is native to South America, where it occurs in the Madeira River basin in Bolivia and Brazil, although it has subsequently been introduced to various countries. ''Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus'' is typically found in floodplain lakes, swamps, and borrow pits in water with a low concentration of oxygen. As such, it is a facultative air-breather that appears to use its specialized stomach as an accessory respiratory organ, and it is known to typically rely on breathing air for long periods of time. The species is very large for a loricariid, reaching 70 cm (27.6 inches) in total length Fish measurement is the measuring of individual fish and various parts of their anatomies. These data are used in many areas of ichthyology, including taxonomy and fisheries biology. Overall length * Standard length (SL) is the length of a fish .... It is ... Pterygoplichthys Pardalis
''Pterygoplichthys pardalis'', the Amazon sailfin catfish, is a freshwater fish, freshwater tropical fish in the armored catfish family (Loricariidae). It is one of a number of species commonly referred to as the common pleco or "leopard pleco" by aquarists. Description This species will grow to a maximum length of Fish measurement, SL and reach a weight of 310 g. It is sometimes confused with the ''Hypostomus plecostomus'' (another armored catfish known as the "common plecostomus"). The two species can be distinguished by their number of dorsal rays. ''P. pardalis'' has 11–13, while the ''H. plecostomus'' has only 5–8 dorsal rays. It is also commonly misindentified as ''P. disjunctivus'' and can be differentiated by its spotted patterning. There is an albino color variation of this species, usually referred to as an "Albino Plecostomus". The amelanistic form may also be sold as the "chocolate pleco". Distribution and habitat The species is native to the Amazon Basin, Amaz ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
