Hypoptopomatini
The Hypoptopomatinae are a subfamily of catfishes (order Siluriformes) of the family Loricariidae, composed of 17 genera and approximately 80 species. This subfamily represents about one-tenth of all loricariid species. It has been divided into two tribes, Hypoptopomatini and Otothyrini. However, in a 2005 analysis, Otothyrini was found to not be monophyletic, with its representatives comprising a paraphyletic group in relation to the tribe Hypoptopomatini. More recent phylogenetic evidence shows that Hypoptopomatini and Otothyrini, while each are monophyletic tribes, do not form a monophyletic subfamily, and therefore should each be recognized as their own individual subfamilies. Problematically, the most recent hypoptopomatine genera, '' Gymnotocinclus'' and ''Rhinolekos'', were not classified in either of the tribes. Almost all species of Hypoptopomatinae have a diploid number of 2n = 54; this group is karyotypically very conserved. Hypoptopomatinae are distributed east of t ...

Otocinclus Cocama
''Otocinclus'' is a genus of catfish in the family Loricariidae native to South America, commonly known as "dwarf suckers" or "otos". This genus, like other loricariids, is characterized by rows of armour plating covering the body, as well as the underslung suckermouth. They are generally small in size; ''O. tapirape'' is the smallest of the species (2.4 cm), while ''O. flexilis'' is the biggest (5.5 cm). These species have adaptations that allow them to breathe air. A duct forms at the junction between the esophagus and the stomach and expands into an enlarged, ring-like diverticulum, characteristic of this genus, which allows air-breathing.Armbruster, J.W. (1998)Modifications of the Digestive Tract for Holding Air in Loricariid and Scoloplacid Catfishes.''Copeia, 1998 (3): 663–675.'' ''Otocinclus'' are popular aquarium fish, and they are often purchased as algae eaters. It is difficult to breed them in captivity, and only wild caught ''Otocinclus'' are available to ...

Oxyropsis
''Oxyropsis'' is a genus of fish in the family Loricariidae native to South America. These species are distinguished by the presence of a single row of enlarged odontodes along the trunk midline lying adjacent and immediately dorsal to, the lateral line canal. Species of this genus have a depressed head and have relatively large eyes placed ventrolaterally. This genus is most similar to '' Hypoptopoma'' in external appearance, which shares the head shape and eye placement. ''Oxyropsis'' are elongate and have a narrow caudal peduncle, which distinguishes it from all other Hypoptopomatinae genera except '' Niobichthys'' and '' Acestridium''.Aquino, A.E. & Schaefer, S.A. Macrotocinclus
The golden otocinclus (''Macrotocinclus affinis'', formerly ''Otocinclus affinis'') is one of the smallest known suckermouth catfish, often called a 'dwarf oto'. Endemic to Southeast Brazil, this herbivorous, rheophilic, bottom-feeder only grows to around in length. The close relatives of this small fish are often used for the purpose of controlling algae in small home aquariums, under the name ''Otocinclus affinis''. In reality, they belong to the species ''O. vittatus'', ''O. vestitus'' and ''O. macrospilus''. The real ''M. affinis'' is not present in the aquarium hobby. ''M. affinis'' is a Batesian mimic of ''Corydoras nattereri''. Due to its narrow stripe, ''M. affinis'' resembles this ''Corydoras'' species more than it does ''Otocinclus'' species. ''M. affinis'' prefers an aquarium with fast moving water, sandy substrate, and plenty of hiding areas (old broken clay pipes is a preferred hiding habitat). Preferred pH is slightly acidic with a tank temperature of . This part ...

Acestridium
''Acestridium'' is a genus of freshwater fish in the family Loricariidae of order Siluriformes. The type species is ''Acestridium discus''. The genus name is derived from Latinised Greek 'agkistron' meaning hook. ''Acestridium'' species are native to small streams of the Amazon region of Brazil, Venezuela, and Colombia. Species of this genus are found in litter banks. Members of this genus typically are long and thin, or 'twiglike' and superficially resemble the genus ''Farlowella'' of the same family. Adult length is 5–7 cm and each species shows adaptation for camouflage in the water margins - bright green leaf like in ''Acestridium dichromum'' and varigated brown in other species. Species There are currently seven recognized species in this genus: * '' Acestridium colombiense'' Retzer, 2005 * '' Acestridium dichromum'' Retzer, Nico & Provenzano, 1999 * '' Acestridium discus'' Haseman, 1911 * '' Acestridium gymnogaster'' Reis & Lehmann A., 2009 * '' Acestridium m ...

Loricariidae
The Loricariidae is the largest family of catfish (order Siluriformes), with 92 genera and just over 680 species. Loricariids originate from freshwater habitats of Costa Rica, Panama, and tropical and subtropical South America. These fish are noted for the bony plates covering their bodies and their suckermouths. Several genera are sold as " plecos", notably the suckermouth catfish, ''Hypostomus plecostomus'', and are popular as aquarium fish. Common names Members of the family Loricariidae are commonly referred to as loricariids, suckermouth armoured catfishes, or armoured catfish. The name "plecostomus", and its shortened forms "pleco" and "plec", are used for many Loricariidae, since ''Plecostomus plecostomus'' (now called ''Hypostomus plecostomus'') was one of the first loricariid species imported for the fish-keeping hobby. Some loricariids are not normally considered "plecostomus", such as ''Farlowella'' catfish. In their native range, these fish are known as ''cascudos'' ...

Catfish
Catfish (or catfishes; order Siluriformes or Nematognathi) are a diverse group of ray-finned fish. Named for their prominent barbels, which resemble a cat's whiskers, catfish range in size and behavior from the three largest species alive, the Mekong giant catfish from Southeast Asia, the wels catfish of Eurasia, and the piraíba of South America, to detritivores (species that eat dead material on the bottom), and even to a tiny parasitic species commonly called the candiru, ''Vandellia cirrhosa''. Neither the armour-plated types nor the naked types have scales. Despite their name, not all catfish have prominent barbels or "whiskers". Members of the Siluriformes order are defined by features of the skull and swimbladder. Catfish are of considerable commercial importance; many of the larger species are farmed or fished for food. Many of the smaller species, particularly the genus ''Corydoras'', are important in the aquarium hobby. Many catfish are nocturnal,
