Huun-Huur-Tu
Huun-Huur-Tu ( tyv, Хүн Хүртү, Hün Hürtü, ; rus, Хуун-Хуур-Ту, ) are a music group from Tuva, a Russian federative republic situated on the Mongolia–Russia border. Their music includes throat singing, in which the singers sing both a note and its overtones, thus producing two or three notes simultaneously. The overtone may sound like a flute, whistle or bird, but is solely a product of the human voice. The group primarily use native Tuvan instruments such as the ''igil'', ''khomus'' (Tuvan jaw harp), ''doshpuluur'', and ''dünggür'' (shaman drum). However, in recent years, the group have begun to selectively incorporate Western instruments, such as the guitar. While the thrust of Huun-Huur-Tu's music is fundamentally indigenous Tuvan folk music, they also experiment with incorporating Western instruments and electronic music. The Orphan's Lament
''The Orphan's Lament'' is an album by the Tuvan musical group Huun-Huur-Tu. It was released in 1994. The group supported the album with a North American tour. Production Recorded in New York and Moscow, the album was produced by Alexander Bapa, who also played percussion. Anatoli Kuular joined the group after the departure of Albert Kuvezin. The group used a doshpuluur as well as a dazhaanning khavy, a percussive instrument crafted from a bull scrotum. Critical reception ''Entertainment Weekly'' praised the "rich, piercingly evocative musical universe." Kaigal-ool Khovalyg
Kaigal-ool Kim-oolovich Khovalyg; tyv, Ховалыг Кайгал-оол Ким-оол оглу, Chovalyg Kajgal-ool Kim-ool oglu, . (born 20 August 1960) is a Tuvan throat singer and co-founder of the Tuvan music group Huun-Huur-Tu. A self-taught overtone singer, Khovalyg worked as a shepherd until the age of 18. His musical career began when he was invited to join the Tuvan State Ensemble in 1979. He settled in Kyzyl and started teaching throat singing and igil. In 1993, after more than ten years with the State Ensemble, he left to devote his attention to his newly formed group, ''Huun-Huur-Tu''. Tuvan Throat Singing
Tuvan throat singing, the main technique of which is known as ''khoomei'' ( tyv, хөөмей, xöömej, mn, хөөмий; ᠬᠦᠭᠡᠮᠡᠢ, khöömii, russian: хоомей, Chinese: 呼麦, pinyin: ''hūmài''), includes a type of overtone singing practiced by people in Tuva, Mongolia, and Siberia. In 2009, it was included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO. The term ''hömey'' / ''kömey'' means ''throat'' and ''larynx'' in different Turkic languages. Yat-Kha
Yat-Kha is a band from Tuva, led by vocalist/guitarist Albert Kuvezin. Their music is a mixture of Tuvan traditional music and rock, featuring Kuvezin's distinctive ''kargyraa'' throat singing style, the '' kanzat kargyraa''. Biography Yat-Kha was founded in Moscow in 1991, as a collaborative project between Kuvezin and Russian avant-garde, electronic composer Ivan Sokolovsky. The project blended traditional Tuvan folk music with post-modern rhythms and electronic effects. Kuvezin and Sokolovsky toured and played festivals, and eventually took the name “Yat-Kha,” which refers to a type of small, Central Asian zither similar to the Mongolian ''yatga'' and the Chinese ''guzheng'', which Kuvezin plays in addition to the guitar. Kongar-ool Borisovich Ondar ( tyv, Ондар Коңгар-оол Борис оглу, ''Ondar Konggar-ool Boris oglu'', , russian: Конгар-оол Борисович Ондар; 29 March 1962 – 25 July 2013) was a master Soviet and Russian Tuvan throat singer and a member of the Great Khural of Tuva. Ondar was born near the Khemchik River in western Tuva, in the village of Iyme. In the Central Asian tradition of self-fulfilling child naming, ''Kongar-ool'' literally translates to "loud boy."
