Winger is an American heavy metal band that has combined elements of glam metal and progressive metal. Formed in New York City, Winger gained popularity during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The band's two platinum albums, '' Winger'', and ''In the Heart of the Young'', along with charting singles "Seventeen", "Headed for a Heartbreak" and " Miles Away", put them on the top of the charts by the early 1990s. In 1990, the band was nominated for an American Music Award for "Best New Heavy Metal Band". As the music scene changed in the early to mid-1990s due to the popularity of grunge, their success faded following their third release, ''Pull''. Winger disbanded in 1994. In 2001 they reunited and have since conducted several successful tours. ''Winger'' is the debut studio album by American rock band Winger. The album was released through Atlantic Records in 1988 and was produced by Beau Hill. Background The music was radio-friendly, but with a progressive twist. The lyrics, however, were typical of the age and genre. The name "Sahara" appears in the lower right hand section of the album cover. The band initially wanted to call themselves "Sahara", but that name was taken by another band at the time. Though they ultimately chose the name Winger, "Sahara" remained on the cover. A number of radio and video hits were extracted from the album, including "Headed for a Heartbreak" and " Seventeen", peaking at No. 19 and No. 26 at the '' Billboard''s single chart. On February 11, 1989, the album peaked at number 21 on the ''Billboard'' 200, and after that stayed on the chart for 63 weeks. Atlantic Recording Corporation (simply known as Atlantic Records) is an American record label founded in October 1947 by Ahmet Ertegun and Herb Abramson. Charles Frederick Kip Winger (born June 21, 1961) is an American bass guitarist and singer, active as a member of the rock band Winger and as a solo artist. He initially gained notability as a member of Alice Cooper's band, contributing bass and vocals to his '' Constrictor'' and ''Raise Your Fist and Yell'' albums. Biography Early days Winger was born in Colorado to parents who were both musicians. At age 16, Winger began studying classical music after hearing the works of composers such as Debussy, Ravel, and Stravinsky in ballet class. At that time he sent a demo tape to Alan Parsons, from whom he received a personal reply. Richard Earl "Reb" Beach Jr. (born August 31, 1963) is an American rock guitarist. He is a member of the bands Winger and Whitesnake. Career After graduating from Fox Chapel Area High School and attending Berklee College of Music in the early 1980s, he played in Fiona's backing band and became an accomplished studio musician, working with the likes of Howard Jones, Chaka Khan, The Bee Gees, Twisted Sister, and Roger Daltrey, among others, showcasing Beach's ability to adapt to various musical styles. While working with Fiona, he was introduced to Kip Winger, who was touring with Alice Cooper at the time. Eventually they formed the band Sahara along with Rod Morgenstein and Paul Taylor, which was later renamed to Winger. Beau Hill is an American record producer who is best known for his work with Alice Cooper, Kix, Winger, Streets, Warrant, Fiona, Europe, and Ratt. He also played instruments and sang backing vocals for some of the artists that he produced, as well as for his own bands Airborne (which had a record released in 1979 on Columbia), and Shanghai, who both released albums in the early 1980s. Written by frontman Kip Winger and guitarist Reb Beach, "Can't Get Enuff" was the first single from the band's second album, debuting on the U.S. charts in July 1990. The song's music video, directed by Michael Bay, received heavy rotation at MTV and the up-tempo rocker was Winger's most successful track at rock radio, where it peaked at #6 on the '' Billboard'' Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
