Hundreds Of South Australia
The lands administrative divisions of South Australia are the cadastral (i.e., comprehensively surveyed and mapped) units of counties and hundreds in South Australia. They are located only in the south-eastern part of the state, and do not cover the whole state. 49 counties have been proclaimed across the southern and southeastern areas of the state historically considered to be arable and thus in need of a cadastre. Within that area, a total of 540 hundreds have been proclaimed, although five were annulled in 1870, and, in some cases, the names reused elsewhere. All South Australian hundreds have unique names, making it unnecessary, when referring to a hundred, to also name its county (as is done in some land administration systems such as that of New South Wales). With the exception of the historic Hundred of Murray (1853–1870), which occupied parts of five counties, all hundreds have been defined as a subset of a single county. The hundreds of South Australia formed the ...

South Australia Cadastral Divisions 1886
South is one of the cardinal directions or compass points. The direction is the opposite of north and is perpendicular to both east and west. Etymology The word ''south'' comes from Old English ''sūþ'', from earlier Proto-Germanic ''*sunþaz'' ("south"), possibly related to the same Proto-Indo-European root that the word ''sun'' derived from. Some languages describe south in the same way, from the fact that it is the direction of the sun at noon (in the Northern Hemisphere), like Latin meridies 'noon, south' (from medius 'middle' + dies 'day', cf English meridional), while others describe south as the right-hand side of the rising sun, like Biblical Hebrew תֵּימָן teiman 'south' from יָמִין yamin 'right', Aramaic תַּימנַא taymna from יָמִין yamin 'right' and Syriac ܬܰܝܡܢܳܐ taymna from ܝܰܡܝܺܢܳܐ yamina (hence the name of Yemen, the land to the south/right of the Levant). Navigation By convention, the ''bottom or down-facing side'' of ...

Hundreds The county is divided into the following hundreds, from north west to south east: * Hundred of Port Adelaide in the north west beside Gulf St Vincent between the Gawler River and Grand Junction Road * Hundred of Barossa in the north spanning the Barossa Range * Hundred of Munno Para in the north between the Gawler and Little Para rivers * Hundred of Para Wirra in the north east immediately south of the South Para River * Hundred of Yatala beside Gulf St Vincent between t ...

Hundred Of Sturdee
100 or one hundred (Roman numeral: C) is the natural number following 99 and preceding 101. In medieval contexts, it may be described as the short hundred or five score in order to differentiate the English and Germanic use of "hundred" to describe the long hundred of six score or 120. In mathematics 100 is the square of 10 (in scientific notation it is written as 102). The standard SI prefix for a hundred is " hecto-". 100 is the basis of percentages (''per cent'' meaning "per hundred" in Latin), with 100% being a full amount. 100 is a Harshad number in decimal, and also in base-four, a base in-which it is also a self-descriptive number. 100 is the sum of the first nine prime numbers, from 2 through 23. It is also divisible by the number of primes below it, 25. 100 cannot be expressed as the difference between any integer and the total of coprimes below it, making it a noncototient. 100 has a reduced totient of 20, and an Euler totient of 40. A totient value of ...

Hundred Of Jellicoe
The Hundred of Jellicoe (formerly Hundred of North Rhine) is a cadastral hundred in the County of Eyre in South Australia. It is located on the east Mount Lofty Ranges foothills. The Hundred of North Rhine was proclaimed in 1851 but the name was changed in 1918 to the current, after Admiral John Jellicoe, as part of a process to remove "names of enemy origin" at the time of World War I. The Hundred of Jellicoe includes the township and most of the locality of Truro, Towitta, Keyneton and a portion of the western edge of the locality of Sedan. The original name "North Rhine" is in reference to the North Rhine River, a tributary of the Marne River (formerly known as South Rhine). The North Rhine flows southwards through the hundred from its source at the north western boundary between Moculta and Keyneton (part of the western boundary between the Hundred of Moorooroo and Jellicoe) to join the Marne about east of Eden Valley. Pioneer Johann Menge named the North and Sout ...

Hundred Of Beatty
The Hundred of Beatty, formerly the Hundred of Krichauff is a cadastral unit of hundred located in the Murraylands of South Australia spanning the localities of Beatty and Mount Mary. History The hundred was proclaimed in 1883 in the County of Eyre and named 'Krichauff' for the state parliamentarian Friedrich Krichauff. In 1888 the District Council of Morgan was established in the area as part of the District Councils Act 1887. It included seven hundreds in addition to the Hundred of Beatty. In 1918 many South Australian place "names of enemy origin" were changed to sound less German and the hundred was renamed to 'Beatty' after David Beatty, a British naval leader in the First World War. In 1997 the Morgan council was abolished by amalgamation with Ridley-Truro and Mannum councils, to the south, and the Hundred of Beatty became a part of the much larger Mid Murray Council The Mid Murray Council is a local government area in South Australia in the Murray and Mallee re ...

Australian Place Names Changed From German Names
During World War I, many German or German-sounding place names in Australia were changed due to anti-German sentiment. The presence of German-derived place names was seen as an affront to the war effort at the time. The names were often changed by being anglicised (such as Peterborough), or by being given new names of Aboriginal origin (Kobandilla, Karawirra) or in commemoration of notable soldiers ( Kitchener and Holbrook) or World War I battlefields (Verdun, The Somme). New South Wales Queensland South Australia The South Australian ''Nomenclature Act 1917'' authorised the compilation and gazetting of a list of place-names contained in a report of the previous October prepared by a parliamentary "nomenclature committee", and authorised the Governor of South Australia, by proclamation, to "alter any place-name which he deems to be of enemy origin to some other name specified in the proclamation".''Nomenclature Act 1917 (SA)' /ref> The table below includes the 69 c ...

Aboriginal Australians
Aboriginal Australians are the various Indigenous peoples of the Australian mainland and many of its islands, such as Tasmania, Fraser Island, Hinchinbrook Island, the Tiwi Islands, and Groote Eylandt, but excluding the Torres Strait Islands. The term Indigenous Australians refers to Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders collectively. It is generally used when both groups are included in the topic being addressed. Torres Strait Islanders are ethnically and culturally distinct, despite extensive cultural exchange with some of the Aboriginal groups. The Torres Strait Islands are mostly part of Queensland but have a separate governmental status. Aboriginal Australians comprise many distinct peoples who have developed across Australia for over 50,000 years. These peoples have a broadly shared, though complex, genetic history, but only in the last 200 years have they been defined and started to self-identify as a single group. Australian Aboriginal identity has cha ...

First World War
World War I (28 July 1914 11 November 1918), often abbreviated as WWI, was one of the deadliest global conflicts in history. Belligerents included much of Europe, the Russian Empire, the United States, and the Ottoman Empire, with fighting occurring throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the Pacific, and parts of Asia. An estimated 9 million soldiers were killed in combat, plus another 23 million wounded, while 5 million civilians died as a result of military action, hunger, and disease. Millions more died in genocides within the Ottoman Empire and in the 1918 influenza pandemic, which was exacerbated by the movement of combatants during the war. Prior to 1914, the European great powers were divided between the Triple Entente (comprising France, Russia, and Britain) and the Triple Alliance (containing Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy). Tensions in the Balkans came to a head on 28 June 1914, following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdina ...
