Hundred Of Melville
The Hundred of Melville is a cadastral unit of hundred in South Australia on the southern Yorke Peninsula. It is one of the 16 hundreds of the County of Fergusson. Proclaimed on 18 February June 1869, it was named after Lord Melville, First Lord of the Admiralty (chief of the Royal Navy) in the 1810s and 1820s. The localities of Coobowie, Edithburgh, Honiton, Sultana Point and parts of Port Moorowie, Wool Bay and Yorketown are within the hundred boundaries. Local government The first local government body within the hundred was the District Council of Melville, formed in 1875 and comprising the Hundred of Melville and part of the Hundred of Moorowie. The Corporate Town of Yorketown, at the north of the hundred, seceded from Melville in 1879. Then, in 1882, the Corporate Town of Edithburgh in the east of the hundred also seceded from Melville. Edithburgh, South Australia
Edithburgh is a small town on the south-east corner of Yorke Peninsula situated on the coastline of Salt Creek Bay, in the state of South Australia. Edithburgh is about west of Adelaide across Gulf St Vincent, but away by road. At the 2016 census, the locality had a population of 516 of which 454 lived in its town centre. Edithburgh is in the Yorke Peninsula Council, the South Australian House of Assembly electoral district of Narungga and the Australian House of Representatives Division of Grey. History In the Narangga language of the Indigenous Narungga people, Edithburgh was known by the place name Pararmarati. Some sources give the pronunciation "Barram-marrat-tee". The first European pioneers arrived in the 1840s and were sheep graziers and pastoralists. Sultana Point, South Australia
__NOTOC__ Sultana Point is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on the Yorke Peninsula immediately adjoining the western head of Gulf St Vincent about west of the state capital of Adelaide. Its boundaries were created in November 2011 in response to a request from the then District Council of the Yorke Peninsula to “formally recognise this long established community.” The locality is bounded to the north by Hilsea Road and by Wattle Bay Road to the west. At the 2016 census, the locality shared a population of 516 with the adjoining locality of Edithburgh . Lands Administrative Divisions Of South Australia
The lands administrative divisions of South Australia are the cadastral (i.e., comprehensively surveyed and mapped) units of counties and hundreds in South Australia. They are located only in the south-eastern part of the state, and do not cover the whole state. 49 counties have been proclaimed across the southern and southeastern areas of the state historically considered to be arable and thus in need of a cadastre. Within that area, a total of 540 hundreds have been proclaimed, although five were annulled in 1870, and, in some cases, the names reused elsewhere. All South Australian hundreds have unique names, making it unnecessary, when referring to a hundred, to also name its county (as is done in some land administration systems such as that of New South Wales). The council seat is at Maitland; the council also maintains branch offices at Minlaton and Yorketown.
