Humphrey Baker
Humphrey Baker (fl. 1562–1587), was an English writer on arithmetic and astrology. Biography Baker was a Londoner. In 1562 he published ''The Wellspring of Sciences,'' an introductory arithmetic textbook which was second in popularity only to Robert Recorde's '' The Grounde of Artes'' during the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Both were eventually supplanted by Edward Cocker's ''Cocker's Arithmetick'' at the turn of the eighteenth century. Baker was an enthusiast for his science. In the dedication of his edition of 1574 "to the Governor, Consuls, Asistentes, &c. of the Company of Merchentes Adventurers," he excuses himself for not entering fully into the merits of arithmetic, on the ground that 'where good wine is to sell, there neede no garlande be hāged out.' He nevertheless proceeds to state that it is well known 'that the skil hereof immediately flowed from the wisdome of God into the harte of man, whome he coulde not conceave to remayne in the most secrete misteri ...

Robert Recorde
Robert Recorde () was an Anglo-Welsh physician and mathematician. He invented the equals sign (=) and also introduced the pre-existing plus and minus signs, plus sign (+) to English speakers in 1557. Biography Born around 1512, Robert Recorde was the second and last son of Thomas and Rose Recorde of Tenby, Pembrokeshire, in Wales. Recorde entered the University of Oxford about 1525, and was elected a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, All Souls College there in 1531. Having adopted medicine as a profession, he went to the University of Cambridge to take the degree of M.D. in 1545. He afterwards returned to Oxford, where he publicly taught mathematics, as he had done prior to going to Cambridge. He invented the "equals" sign. Edward Cocker
Edward Cocker (163122 August 1676) was an English engraver, who also taught writing and arithmetic. Cocker was the reputed author of the famous ''Arithmetick'', the popularity of which has added a phrase ("according to Cocker") to the list of English proverbialisms. Cocker's Arithmetick
''Cocker's Arithmetick'', also known by its full title "Cocker's Arithmetick: Being a Plain and Familiar Method Suitable to the Meanest Capacity for the Full Understanding of That Incomparable Art, As It Is Now Taught by the Ablest School-Masters in City and Country", is a grammar school mathematics textbook written by Edward Cocker (1631–1676) and published posthumously by John Hawkins in 1678. ''Arithmetick'' along with companion volume, '' Decimal Arithmetick'' published in 1684, were used to teach mathematics in schools in the United Kingdom for more than 150 years. Some controversy exists over the authorship of the book. Augustus De Morgan claimed the work was written by Hawkins, who merely used Cocker's name to lend the authority of his reputation to the book.
