The Ambassador of Australia to Egypt is an officer of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the head of the Embassy of the Commonwealth of Australia to the Arab Republic of Egypt. The current ambassador, since November 2018, is Glenn Miles, who resides in Cairo. The Ambassador also holds non-resident accreditation as Ambassador to Eritrea, Syria and Sudan. Australia opened its first embassy in the Arab world in Cairo, in 1950. There existed an embassy in Damascus, Syria from 1977 to 1999. Prior to 1977, accreditation for Syria was held by the embassies in Beirut, Lebanon (1973–1976) and Baghdad, Iraq (1976–1977). Roden Cutler
Sir Arthur Roden Cutler, (24 May 1916 – 21 February 2002) was an Australian diplomat, the longest serving Governor of New South Wales and a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry "in the face of the enemy" that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth armed forces. Early life Arthur Roden Cutler was born on 24 May 1916. His cousin, Sir Charles Cutler, was Deputy Premier of New South Wales from 1965 to 1975. Arthur grew up in the Sydney Harbour suburb of Manly where he attended the Manly Village Public School. At the age of 15 he enrolled at Sydney Boys High School. After school, he worked for the Texas Company Australasia, which later became Texaco. He studied economics during the night at the University of Sydney and joined the Sydney University Regiment in 1936. Alfred Stirling
Alfred Thorp Stirling (8 September 1902 – 3 July 1981) was an Australian diplomat. Stirling was the eldest of three children of Australian surgeon Robert Andrew Stirling and his second wife Isabella Jessie Matilda Oades-Thorp, a nurse from England. He graduated from the University of Melbourne (BA, 1922; MA, LL.B, 1924) where he excelled in French and won a W. T. Mollison scholarship for studying at University College, Oxford. He received his bachelor's degree there in 1927 and then worked as assistant to Robert Menzies in Melbourne. The two eventually became lifelong friends, and when Menzies became attorney-general he appointed Stirling as his secretary (1934–36). Stirling joined the Department of External Affairs in Canberra, where he headed the political section for a year. Sir Edwin McCarthy (30 March 18964 September 1980) was a senior Australian public servant and diplomat. He was a prominent senior trade official, including as head of the Department of Commerce and Agriculture between 1945 and 1950. Life and career McCarthy was born in Walhalla, Victoria on 30 March 1896 to parents Catherine McCarthy (née Kennedy) and Daniel McCarthy. He joined the Commonwealth Public Service as a messenger in the Postmaster-General's Department in April 1911. McCarthy married Marjorie Mary Graham on 4 July 1939 in Sydney. The couple had two children: a daughter, and a son, John McCarthy. From 1945 to 1950, McCarthy was Secretary of the Department of Commerce and Agriculture. Dominic Mary (Paul) McGuire (3 April 190315 June 1978) was an Australian writer, public servant and diplomat. Life and career McGuire was born in Peterborough, South Australia on 3 April 1903. His father, James McGuire, was the Railways Commissioner. He attended Christian Brothers College, Adelaide and the University of Adelaide. At university he was the Tinline Scholar in History. Also as a university student he helped to organise Save the Children Australia raising money for famine relief targeted to Russian children following World War I. McGuire began story-writing with detective stories, some of which were published in the United Kingdom. Between 1932 and 1936, McGuire published ten novels, a book of verse and an essay on the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins.
