Hugh Duff (bowls)
Hugh Duff is a retired Scottish lawn and indoor bowler. He was a member of the Auchinleck Indoor Bowling Club. World Indoor Bowls Championships
The World Indoor Bowls Championship is an international bowls competition held annual at Potters holiday park in Hopton on Sea. The last week of the competition is televised live on BBC where the open singles and open pairs', women's singles and mixed pairs' finals are shown. History The competition was first held in 1979 in Coatbridge, Scotland as a men's singles only event. The first event was sponsored by Embassy Cigarettes. In 1986, the men's pairs competition was added to the championship. In 1988, a rule change allowed women to compete for the first time and the women's singles competition was created. This rule change also changed expanded the men's singles and pairs competition and both become open tournaments. In 1989, the championships moved to the Guild Hall in Preston, England And Churchill Insurance took over the sponsorship. 1988 World Indoor Bowls Championship
The 1988 Embassy World Indoor Bowls Championship was held at Alexandra Palace, London, England, from 5 to 13 March 1988. The event moved to the newly rebuilt Alexandra Palace from the Coatbridge indoor bowling club. Seeds were introduced for the first time. Hugh Duff won the title beating Wynne Richards in the final five games to one (7-0, 7-1, 2-7, 7-6, 7-4, 7-4). The 1988 Midland Bank World Indoor Pairs Championship was held at the Bournemouth International Centre from 5 to 13 December 1987+.(+ Held in Dec 1987 to avoid a clash with the 1988 World Outdoor Championships). Ian Schuback & Jim Yates won the title defeating Andy Thomson & Gary Smith 5-1 in the final (6-3, 7-5, 5-7, 8-2, 7-5, 7-5). The 1997 SAGA World World Indoor Bowls Championship was held at Preston Guild Hall, Preston, England, from 23 January – 2 February 1997. 2002 World Indoor Bowls Championship
The 2002 Potters Holidays World Indoor Bowls Championship was held at Potters Leisure Resort, Hopton on Sea, Great Yarmouth, England, from 08-26 January 2002. In the singles Tony Allcock completed a shock victory. Unseeded and unfancied the Englishman’s win equalled the record of three title wins by David Bryant and Richard Corsie. In the pairs Hugh Duff & Paul Foster defeated Greg Harlow & Graham Robertson in the final. The women's singles competition took place in Belfast from April 18–20. The title was won by Carol Ashby. Notes A new scoring format was introduced; a game would now consist of two sets of nine ends. If the two sets resulted in draw (one set each) then a deciding set of just three ends would be played to determine the winner. Bowls, also known as lawn bowls or lawn bowling, is a sport in which the objective is to roll biased balls so that they stop close to a smaller ball called a "jack" or "kitty". It is played on a bowling green, which may be flat (for "flat-green bowls") or convex or uneven (for "crown green bowls"). Paul James Foster (born 13 March 1973) is a multiple world bowls champion who lives in Troon, Scotland. He plays at Troon Portland (Outdoor) & Ambassador Prestwick (Indoor) bowling clubs. Bowling career Indoor career Foster is the second most prolific winner of the World Indoor Championship singles title, behind six-times winner, pairs partner and close friend Alex Marshall. He has five wins from seven final appearances (in 1998, 2001, 2005, 2011 and 2017), with his two defeats coming in the 2013 final to Stewart Anderson and in the 2022 final to Les Gillett. In addition, Foster has won another eight world indoor titles, bringing his career record to 13. He has won the pairs five times, once with Hugh Duff in 2002 and four times with Alex Marshall ( 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2019).
