Hubert Stephens
Hubert Durrett Stephens (July 2, 1875March 14, 1946) was an American politician who served as a Democratic United States Senator from Mississippi from 1923 until 1935. Stephens was born in New Albany, Mississippi. He graduated from the University of Mississippi law school and soon began to practice law in New Albany. Stephens served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1911 to 1921; in his final term he did not run for re-election, but he was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1922. In 1925 Stephens unsuccessfully attempted to intervene in the Lynching of L. Q. Ivy, a Black man accused of rape in New Albany. In 1934, he was defeated by Theodore Bilbo in the primary. Stephens was the director of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation from 1935 to 1936. Pat Harrison
Byron Patton "Pat" Harrison (August 29, 1881June 22, 1941) was a Mississippi politician who served as a Democrat in the United States House of Representatives from 1911 to 1919 and in the United States Senate from 1919 until his death. Early life and education Pat Harrison was born at Crystal Springs, Mississippi. His father was a Confederate veteran of the Civil War and died in 1885. As a child, Harrison sold newspapers to supplement his family's income. After graduating as class valedictorian from Crystal Springs High School in 1899, he attended a summer term at the University of Mississippi before transferring to Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge on a baseball scholarship. He dropped out after two years due to a lack of funds but was brought on to pitch for the Pickens, Mississippi, semi-professional baseball team in the 'Old Tomato League' summer circuit. The 1922 United States Senate election in Mississippi was held on November 7, 1922. Incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator John Sharp Williams did not run for re-election to a third term in office. In the Democratic primary to succeed Williams, U.S. Representative Hubert D. Stephens defeated former Senator James K. Vardaman, who had held Mississippi's other Senate seat for one term. The race required a run-off, as neither candidate achieved a majority in the August primary with suffragette Belle Kearney in the race.
