Horsley Hill
Horsley Hill was a football and rugby league ground and greyhound racing track in South Shields. History South Shields RLFC were established in 1902 and played at Horsley Hill during the 1902–03 and 1903–04 seasons. They were voted out of the league at the end of the 1903–04 season. South Shields
South Shields () is a coastal town in South Tyneside, Tyne and Wear, England. It is on the south bank of the mouth of the River Tyne. Historically, it was known in Roman times as Arbeia, and as Caer Urfa by Early Middle Ages. According to the 2011 census, the town had a population of 75,337. The Greyhound Racing Association was a UK-based private company founded in 1925 and existed until 2019. It was involved in the management of sports venues, notably greyhound racing stadia. The GRA was responsible for introducing Greyhound racing in the United Kingdom and was the largest racing operator for 70 years but diminished when trading as GRA Acquisition from 2005-2019. Norman Oliver (greyhound Trainer)
Norman Oliver (1927-2012), was an English greyhound trainer. He was 1973 UK Trainer of the Year. Profile Oliver became involved in greyhound racing through his father Ted Oliver who was a bookmaker. Norman was attached to Brough Park in Newcastle during the entire training career. Oliver's first success was winning the 1962 Midland Flat at Hall Green Stadium, with Happy Sailor. The following year he won several events and reached a major final when he steered Super Car through to the 1963 Scottish Greyhound Derby. In 1967 he won his first major event when Hi Ho Silver won the Scottish Derby. An English Greyhound Derby finalist followed in 1968 when Shady Begonia reached the final. Slough Stadium
Slough Stadium originally known as the Dolphin Stadium was a greyhound racing stadium in Uxbridge Road, Slough, Berkshire. Origins and opening George Bennett Sr. a resident and entrepreneur of Slough bought and sold a cinema in Chalvey before purchasing the Dolphin Hotel in Slough in May 1914. The hotel was next door to the Dolphin ground which had hosted cricket, bowls and football in the nineteenth century. Slough Town AFC took over the ground in 1890 and Bennett became their owner. Bennett decided that the ground required more activity and after watching the new sport of greyhound racing he made the decision to construct a greyhound track around the pitch. Work got underway in 1928 with the stadium taking shape on the east side of the Uxbridge Road and south of the Dolphin Hotel. Reading Stadium (Oxford Road)
Reading Stadium (Oxford Road) was a greyhound racing stadium and short lived speedway venue in Reading. It is not to be confused with Reading Stadium in Bennet Road that opened one year after Oxford Road closed and is located further to the south of Reading. Opening Reading Stadium was situated north-west of the town and was built adjacent to the Great Western Railway and north of Wigmore Lane off the Oxford Road. It opened on Saturday 14 November 1931. The stadium attracted a crowd estimated to be between four and five thousand who came to watch a seven race card produced by Racing Manager Mr J Compton with the first race starting at 7.30pm. Scottish Greyhound Derby
The Scottish Greyhound Derby was an original classic greyhound competition held at Shawfield Stadium. Held at Carntyne Stadium from 1928 to 1968, after the closure of Carntyne the race appeared at Shawfield from 1970 until 1985. In 1988 the Greyhound Racing Association (GRA), moved the race to Powderhall Stadium in Edinburgh because they had the rights to the event and wanted it to take place at one of their tracks. After just two years it returned to Glasgow and Shawfield following the sale of Powderhall by the GRA.
