Horned Melon
''Cucumis metuliferus'', commonly called the African horned cucumber, horned melon, spiked melon, jelly melon, kiwano, or cuke-a-saurus is an annual vine in the cucumber and melon family, ''Cucurbitaceae''. Its fruit has horn-like spines, hence the name "horned melon". The ripe fruit has orange skin and lime green, jelly-like flesh. ''C. metuliferus'' is native to Southern Africa. It is found in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Angola. Kiwano is a traditional food plant in Africa. Along with the Gemsbok cucumber (''Acanthosicyos naudinianus'') and Tsamma (Citron melon) it is one of the few sources of water during the dry season in the Kalahari Desert. The Kalahari Desert is a large semi-arid sandy savanna in Southern Africa extending for , covering much of Botswana, and parts of Namibia and South Africa. Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that affects a wide range of plants. Powdery mildew diseases are caused by many different species of ascomycete fungi in the order Erysiphales. Powdery mildew is one of the easier plant diseases to identify, as its symptoms are quite distinctive. Infected plants display white powdery spots on the leaves and stems. Squash Mosaic Virus
''Squash mosaic virus'' (SqMV) is a mosaic virus disease common in squash plants and other plants, including melons, of the family Cucurbitaceae. It occurs worldwide. It is transmitted primarily by beetles, including the leaf beetle ('' Acalymma trivittata''), spotted cucumber beetle (''Diabrotica undecimpunctata''), and 28-spotted ladybird beetle ('' Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata''), as well as some other beetles.
