Horizon Community College
Horizon Community College is a co-educational secondary school located in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England, on the A628. The school was formed in 2012 from a merger of Holgate School and The Kingstone School. The school relocated to a new campus with facilities for leisure, cultural activities and adult learning to be used by the local community. There is capacity, if needs be, to teach groups as large as 65, using classrooms with removable walls. Anne, Princess Royal visited the School on 4 July 2014 where she met the then local MP (Dan Jarvis), the executive principal ( Nicholas Bowen) and a small selection of pupils. Previously a voluntary aided school administered by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, in June 2019 Horizon Community College converted to academy status. Academy (English School)
An academy school in England is a state-funded school which is directly funded by the Department for Education and independent of local authority control. A628 Road
The A628 is a major road connecting Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire in northern England. It crosses the Pennine hills by way of Longdendale and the Woodhead Pass in the Peak District National Park. The road's altitude and exposure to bad weather create problems in winter and the road is sometimes closed due to snow or high winds. Route The road starts to the east of Manchester at the end of the M67 motorway and A57 road. It passes through Mottram in Longdendale, Hollingworth and Tintwistle and then through Longdendale in the Peak District National Park to Crowden and Salter's Brook Bridge where the road leaves Derbyshire and enters Barnsley Metropolitan Borough. Barnsley College
Barnsley College is a further education college just outside the town centre of Barnsley, England. It has several campuses, including the SciTech Digital Innovation Centre and The Electric Theatre. The college provides A Levels, apprenticeships and vocational courses for students. Upon its last Ofsted inspection, the college was awarded the grade of ''Outstanding'', the highest grade available; further to this award the college was also deemed ''The best college in the UK'' by Ofsted officials. Voluntary Aided School
A voluntary aided school (VA school) is a state-funded school in England and Wales in which a foundation or trust (usually a religious organisation), contributes to building costs and has a substantial influence in the running of the school. In most cases the foundation or trust owns the buildings. Such schools have more autonomy than voluntary controlled schools, which are entirely funded by the state. Daniel Owen Woolgar Jarvis (born 30 November 1972) is a British Labour Party politician and former British Army officer who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Barnsley Central since 2011. Anne, Princess Royal (Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise; born 15 August 1950), is a member of the British royal family. The Kingstone School
Kingstone School was a secondary school located in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. Founded in 1987, the school provided secondary education to pupils aged 11–16. It had a capacity of approximately 1,500, making it one of the largest schools in the area. In September 1987, Kingstone was formed by the amalgamation of Broadway Grammar School with adjacent Charter Comprehensive during the restructure of the British education system. In September 2012 it amalgamated with Holgate School to form Horizon Community College based at a new site on Dodworth road. The Kingstone School buildings were demolished in late 2012 to make way for a housing development. Holgate School was a state school in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. It was closed in 2012, when it was merged with The Kingstone School to form Horizon Community College. After Holgate closed, it was demolished and the site was turned into a car park for Horizon Community College. Admissions The school was awarded the status of Sports College in 2005 for its attention to sporting achievements. History Holgate School was founded in 1546 in Hemsworth by Robert Holgate, the Archbishop of York. In 1888 it was re-organised and moved to Barnsley, South Yorkshire. The grammar school had around 850 boys and moved to its present site in 1912. Barnsley () is a market town in South Yorkshire, England. As the main settlement of the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley and the fourth largest settlement in South Yorkshire.
