__NOTOC__ ''Hope'' is a late oil painting by the Pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones. It was painted on commission for Mrs. George Marston Whitin of Whitinsville, Massachusetts in 1896. Mrs. Whitin originally requested a painting of a dancing figure, but Burne-Jones, devastated by the recent death of his long-time friend and partner William Morris, struggled with the work and wrote to ask if a painting of Hope would be an acceptable alternative. The result was an allegory in the Renaissance fashion, with the bound personification of Hope reaching skyward despite her bars and the chain around her ankle.Wildman (1998), pp. 327–328 In her hand she holds a sprig of apple blossom that symbolised hope. Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, 1st Baronet, (; 28 August, 183317 June, 1898) was a British painter and designer associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood which included Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Millais, Ford Madox Brown and Holman Hunt. Burne-Jones worked with William Morris as a founding partner in Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co in the design of decorative arts. Burne-Jones's early paintings show the influence of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, but by 1870 he had developed his own style. In 1877, he exhibited eight oil paintings at the Grosvenor Gallery (a new rival to the Royal Academy). These included ''The Beguiling of Merlin''. George Frederic Watts (23 February 1817, in London – 1 July 1904) was a British painter and sculptor associated with the Symbolist movement. He said "I paint ideas, not things." Watts became famous in his lifetime for his allegorical works, such as ''Hope'' and ''Love and Life''. These paintings were intended to form part of an epic symbolic cycle called the "House of Life", in which the emotions and aspirations of life would all be represented in a universal symbolic language. ''Hope'' is a Symbolism (arts), Symbolist oil painting by the English painter George Frederic Watts, who completed the first two versions in 1886. Radically different from previous treatments of the subject, it shows a lone blindfolded female figure sitting on a globe, playing a lyre that has only a single string remaining. The background is almost blank, its only visible feature a single star. Watts intentionally used symbolism not traditionally associated with hope to make the painting's meaning ambiguous. While his use of colour in ''Hope'' was greatly admired, at the time of its exhibition many critics disliked the painting. ''Hope'' proved popular with the Aesthetic Movement, who considered beauty the primary purpose of art and were unconcerned by the ambiguity of its message. The Dunedin Public Art Gallery holds the main public art collection of the city of Dunedin, New Zealand. St Martin's Church is in Front Street, Brampton, Cumbria, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Brampton, the archdeaconry of Carlisle and the diocese of Carlisle. St Margaret's Church, Hopton
St Margaret's Church is the parish church of Hopton-on-Sea in the English county of Norfolk. It is dedicated to St Margaret of Antioch. St Margaret is also the dedication of the former church, which was destroyed by fire in 1865. The ruins of the former church remain standing, and are still consecrated. Both the old and new churches are Grade II* listed. Until 1974, Hopton-on-Sea was called Hopton (although the former railway station had changed its name in 1932); the formal name for the benefice remains Hopton.
