Hong Song-dam
Hong Song-dam (; born 1955) is a South Korean artist specializing in woodcuts and best known for his involvement in the Minjung movement. He was born on the island of Hauido and raised in Gwangju, where he took part in the 1980 uprising against Chun Doo-hwan's military dictatorship. He became well known for making prints related to the acts committed by the government under Chun in Seoul, leading to much controversy surrounding his art. After the Gwangju Uprising he became politically active, and in July 1989 was arrested for allegedly breaking the National Security Act (he had sent slides of a mural he had created, along with around 200 other South Korean artists, to North Korea). Amnesty International adopted him as a prisoner of conscience, and he was released from prison in the early 1990s. Woodcuts
Woodcut is a relief printing technique in printmaking. An artist carves an image into the surface of a block of wood—typically with gouges—leaving the printing parts level with the surface while removing the non-printing parts. Areas that the artist cuts away carry no ink, while characters or images at surface level carry the ink to produce the print. The block is cut along the wood grain (unlike wood engraving, where the block is cut in the end-grain). The surface is covered with ink by rolling over the surface with an ink-covered roller (brayer), leaving ink upon the flat surface but not in the non-printing areas. Multiple colors can be printed by keying the paper to a frame around the woodblocks (using a different block for each color). Sinking Of MV Sewol
The ferry MV ''Sewol'' sank on the morning of April 16, 2014, en route from Incheon towards Jeju in South Korea. The 6,825-ton vessel sent a distress signal from about north of Byeongpungdo at 08:58 KST (23:58 UTC, April 15, 2014). Out of 476 passengers and crew, 306 died in the disaster, including around 250 students from Danwon High School ( Ansan City). Of the approximately 172 survivors, more than half were rescued by fishing boats and other commercial vessels that arrived at the scene approximately 40 minutes before the Korea Coast Guard (KCG). Chonnam National University (CNU) is one of ten Flagship Korean National Universities located in Gwangju and South Jeolla Province, South Korea. In March 2006, Yeosu National University merged with Chonnam National University to become a satellite campus. Minjung Art
Minjung art (Korean: 민중미술, romanization: ''minjung misul'') emerged during the 1980s in South Korea as part of the Minjung movement in the wake of the Gwangju Uprising (1980). Minjung artists utilized a wide array of forms, including oil painting, woodblock print, collage, photomontage, banner painting, and readymade, in order to respond to the political and social climate of the time. A number of artworks were produced for and used in protests, and thus led artists to use reproducible mediums like print. Artist collectives like Reality and Utterance and the Association of Gwangju Freedom Artists played a large role in minjung art, exemplifying the tendency of minjung art to deemphasize individual authorship and maintain a publically-minded ethos. Hauido
Haui-do is an island off the South Korean coast in the Yellow Sea, part of Sinan County in Jeollanam-do province. Its name means 'a lotus floating on water' and although it is an island by name, it actually comprises 56 separate islands, only nine of which are inhabited. Approximately 57 kilometers to shore, it has an area of 14.46 km² and is home to more than 1,900 people. It was the birthplace of former South Korean president Kim Dae-jung.
