Hong Kong Derby
The Hong Kong Derby is a Hong Kong Thoroughbred horse race held annually since 1873. Restricted to horses four-years-old only since 1981, the race is run in mid-March and is the premier event on the domestic racing programme with a purse of HK$18 million (app. US$2.3 million). This race is the last race in the Hong Kong Four-Year-Old Classic Series. The first Hong Kong Derby was raced at Happy Valley Racecourse but in 1979 was transferred permanently to its present location at Sha Tin Racecourse. Since 1981, the Derby has been won by several horses who went on to earn Hong Kong Horse of the Year honors including Football, Co-Tack, Yuno When and River Verdon. In 2003, Elegant Fashion became the first filly to win the Derby since 1976. From 2004 to 2012, the race was sponsored by Mercedes-Benz. It is sponsored by BMW since 2013. Frankie Lor Fu Chuen () is a Hong Kong horse racing trainer and former jockey. Career As jockey Lor began his racing career as a jockey. He won 27 races between 1981 and 1995. He became work rider and later assistant to various trainers, among them John Moore and John Size. As Trainer Frankie Lor got his licence as a trainer in 2017. The end of his first training season (2017–2018) saw him in second place in the trainer's championship. Maxime Guyon (born 7 May 1989) is a French flat racing jockey, who debuted at 2005. In 2008, he received a professional license and won first group one at the Grand Prix de Paris. Douglas Whyte (born 15 Nov 1971 in Johannesburg, South Africa) is a former horse racing jockey and is now a horse trainer. He became Hong Kong champion jockey in the 2000-2001 season and won 13 consecutive titles, a record in flat racing. Designs On Rome (foaled 17 March 2010) is an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse. He is best known for his performances in Hong Kong where he was named Horse of the Year in 2014. Background Designs On Rome is a bay gelding bred in Ireland by the Moyglare Stud. Zac Purton
Zac Purton (born 3 January 1983) is a horse racing jockey. He won the Brisbane jockeys' premiership as an apprentice in 2003, moved to Sydney and was quickly amongst the top jockeys there before he began his Hong Kong career in 2007/08. In the 2013/14 season, Purton ended the 13-year championship reign of Douglas Whyte, becoming the first Australian jockey to win the Hong Kong title since Noel Barker in 1991. . (112 wins). John Moore (born 17 March 1950) is a Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. Moore was born in Sydney, Australia, The son of jockey and trainer George Moore.
