Hong Kong Art Today
Hong Kong Art Today () was an exhibition held at the Hong Kong City Hall Museum and Art Gallery (later renamed Hong Kong Museum of Art in 1975) from 25 May to 4 July 1962. Featuring a total of 120 exhibits by 65 artists, it was the first major exhibition of the Museum and Art Gallery after its opening in March, as well as the first large-scale art competition organised by the government. Apart from the usual practice of inviting participating artists, the event also incorporated an open call for submissions, which caught the attention of the local art scene. In his introductory text for the exhibition catalogue, the museum's curator John Warner explained what he envisioned as the "valid art forms of to-day": "They have shown a preference for material quality, intelligent experiment and originality rather than outworn cliche, dull technical skill and cheap imitation." Hong Kong City Hall
Hong Kong City Hall () is a building located at Edinburgh Place, Central, Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong. Since Hong Kong is a " Special Administrative Region" and not a normal Chinese city, there is no mayor or city council; therefore, the City Hall does not hold the offices of a city government, unlike most city halls around the world. Instead, it is a complex providing municipal services, including performing venues and libraries. The City Hall is managed by the Government's Leisure and Cultural Services Department. The Urban Council (UrbCo) managed the City Hall (through the Urban Services Department) and held its meetings there prior to its dissolution in December 1999. Hong Kong Museum Of Art
The Hong Kong Museum of Art (HKMoA) is the first and main art museum of Hong Kong, located in Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. It is managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Hong Kong Government. HKMoA has an art collection of over 17,000 items. Admission is free for permanent exhibitions. Its rival is the non-government-managed Hong Kong Arts Centre. These two museums are considered to be the top two art museums in Hong Kong that dictate the discourse of art in Hong Kong. Hong Kong was a colony and later a dependent territory of the British Empire from 1841 to 1997, apart from a period of occupation under the Japanese Empire from 1941 to 1945 during the Pacific War. The colonial period began with the British occupation of Hong Kong Island in 1841, during the First Opium War between the British and the Qing dynasty. The Qing had wanted to enforce its prohibition of opium importation within the dynasty that was being exported mostly from British India, as it was causing widespread addiction among its populace. Realism in the arts is generally the attempt to represent subject matter truthfully, without artificiality and avoiding speculative and supernatural elements. Lui Shou-Kwan
Lui Shou-Kwan ( zh, 呂壽琨 (Lü Shoukun); 1919–1975) was a Chinese painter, one of the most prominent ink painters of the 20th century and a founder of the Hong Kong New Ink Movement. Early life Lui was born in Guangzhou. His father, Lui Can Ming, was also a painter. He studied economics at Guangzhou University. He moved to Hong Kong in 1948. While there, he worked as an inspector for the Hongkong and Yaumati Ferry Company until 1966. Art and academic career Lui was active in organising Hong Kong art societies, alongside Chao Shao-an. Wucius Wong
Wucius Wong (born 1936; zh, 王無邪 (Wang Wuxie)) is a Hong Kong Chinese ink painter and leading figure of the Hong Kong New Ink Movement. He has worked to bring attention to Hong Kong's efforts in Chinese contemporary art, and was one of the first artists to bring modernism to the region. Early life and education Wong was born in Guangzhou in 1936, but moved to British Hong Kong the year after. As he grew up, he was surrounded by Chinese culture. He began studying art in 1955 under Lui Shou-Kwan, the prominent Hong Kong ink artist. In the 1960s, Wong left Hong Kong for the United States, attending art school in Ohio and Baltimore for four years.
