Homborsund Lighthouse
Homborsund Lighthouse ( no, Homborsund fyr) is a coastal lighthouse located on the island Store Grønningen in the municipality of Grimstad in Agder county, Norway. It sits about southeast of the village of Homborsund in the Eide area. It was established in 1879, and is listed as a protected cultural site. Homborsund Lighthouse was constructed the same year as Lyngør Lighthouse, and the two stations have similar designs. The station includes a livinghouse for two families, outhouse, boathouse and pier, in addition to the light. The light was automated in 1992, and the station was de-populated. Today it is open to the public for overnight stays and guidance. The surrounding area is a protected bird sanctuary. The tall, white, square-shaped tower has a red top. Agder
Agder is a county (''fylke'') and traditional region in the southern part of Norway. The county was established on 1 January 2020, when the old Vest-Agder and Aust-Agder counties were merged. Since the early 1900s, the term Sørlandet ("south country, south land, southland") has been commonly used for this region, sometimes with the inclusion of neighbouring Rogaland. Before that time, the area was considered a part of Western Norway. Candela
The candela ( or ; symbol: cd) is the unit of luminous intensity in the International System of Units (SI). It measures luminous power per unit solid angle emitted by a light source in a particular direction. Grimstad
Grimstad () is a municipality in Agder county, Norway. It belongs to the geographical region of Sørlandet. The administrative center of the municipality is the town of Grimstad. Some of the villages in Grimstad include Eide, Espenes, Fevik, Fjære, Håbbestad, Hesnes, Homborsund, Jortveit, Kroken, Landvik, Nygrenda, Prestegårdskogen, Reddal, Roresand, Rønnes, Skiftenes, Tjore, Vik, and Østerhus. Homborsund
Homborsund is a village in Grimstad municipality in Agder county, Norway. Location The village is located on the Skagerrak coast in the Eide area of southern Grimstad. The village of Jortveit is located just north of Homborsund. For statistical purposes the population of the two villages is counted together as area 3524 Jortveit, being 662 in 2016. Points of interest The village includes the coastal protected recreational areas of Kalvehageneset and Hoveneset. Hoveneset was sold by Magnus Nymann, a former village priest, to the local authority in order to protect it from development by holidaymakers as the local area is a popular place to own a holiday cabin. This is commemorated by a small cairn near the shore inscribed with Bible verses and poetry by Thomas Kingo. Eide, Aust-Agder
Eide is a former municipality in the old Aust-Agder county in Norway. It is currently located within the municipality of Grimstad in Agder county. The municipality of Eide existed from 1838 until 1962. The municipality included of land on the mainland and the rest being nearly 70 small islands off the Skaggerak coast. The larger islands include Auseøya, Homborøya, and Ålesøya. The administrative centre was the village of Eide where the Eide Church is located. Other villages in Eide included Jortveit and Homborsund. History The municipality of Eide was created on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt law). Lyngør Lighthouse ( no, Lyngør fyr) is a coastal lighthouse located on the island of Kjeholmen in the Lyngør area in the municipality of Tvedestrand in Agder county, Norway. Fresnel Lens
A Fresnel lens ( ; ; or ) is a type of composite compact lens developed by the French physicist Augustin-Jean Fresnel (1788–1827) for use in lighthouses. It has been called "the invention that saved a million ships." Lighthouses In Norway
The coast of Norway is 100,915 km long and there have been a total of 212 lighthouses along it, but no more than 154 have ever been operational at the same time. The first, Lindesnes Lighthouse, opened in 1655; the newest Lighthouse, Anda, was finished in 1932. The first Lighthouses were private operations, but in 1821 the government made the Channel and Harbor Inspector responsible for Lighthouses in Norway. A dedicated Lighthouse Administration was set up in 1841. The Lighthouses are today mostly automated and since 1974, run by the Norwegian Coastal Administration.
