Doug Holyday
Douglas Charles Holyday (born 1942) is a politician in Ontario, Canada. He is a former member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, representing the riding of Etobicoke—Lakeshore for the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario before being defeated by Peter Milczyn in the Ontario general election of 2014. Prior to his election to the legislature, Holyday was a longtime Toronto City Councillor and deputy mayor, representing Ward 3 in Etobicoke Centre, and was the last mayor of the suburban city of Etobicoke prior to the municipal amalgamation of Toronto. Political career An insurance broker by profession, Holyday was first elected to Etobicoke City Council as an alderman in 1982. He was defeated in his bid for the Etobicoke Board of Control in the 1985 municipal election but returned as an Etobicoke city councillor, representing Ward 6, from, 1988 until 1994 when he was elected Mayor. ''Holyday'', later also known as ''The Picnic'', is an oil painting by French painter James Tissot (1836–1902), painted in 1876. Tissot moved to England in the year 1871, when he was thirty five years old and settled there. Before moving to London, Tissot was a successful painter of Paris society. The painting shows a group of elegantly dressed men and women during a picnic at the pond in the painter's garden. The painting is characterized by the attention to detail and vivid colours. ''Holyday'' is held in London's Tate Gallery. Description ''Holyday'' was painted in the back garden of Tissot's London home, near the Lord's Cricket Ground. Barten Holyday or Holiday (1593 – 2 October 1661) was an English clergyman, author and poet.F. D. A. He entered the clergy in 1615; he was appointed Archdeacon of Oxford by King Charles I in 1626. ''Technogamia'' was his only play. In 1618, the year it was produced, Holyday served as Sir Francis Stewart's chaplain on Stewart's embassy to Spain. Holyday translated the ''Odes'' of Horace and works of Juvenal and Persius, and wrote ''A Survey of the World, in Verse'' (1661), plus sermons and miscellaneous works. He was summed up by one commentator as "a good scholar, a shrewd critic, and a fair wit."
