Holy Rosary Cathedral, Kaohsiung
The Holy Rosary Cathedral (; officially called ) is the oldest Catholic church in Taiwan, located in Lingya District, Kaohsiung, just east of the Love River. It is the seat of the Bishop of Kaohsiung. History The cathedral was first established in 1860 by Spanish from Filipinas and rebuilt to its present dimensions in 1928. Architecture The architectural style is modeled after both Gothic and Romanesque. The interior design is loosely similar to that of Manila Cathedral in the Philippines. Activities Mass is held daily, with English mass celebrated at 11:00 a.m. every Sunday. The cathedral is known throughout Kaohsiung for its annual Christmas Eve celebrations, which lasts the whole evening before Christmas Day. Lingya District () is a district of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The 85 Sky Tower and the Kaohsiung City Hall are located here. Lingya District is the administrative center of Kaohsiung City along with Fongshan District. Its population is around 162,356 as of May 2022. It is the 6th most-populated district in Kaohsiung, with a population density of 19,916 people per square kilometer, or 51,581 people per square mile. It has a area of 8.1522 square kilometers, or 3.1476 square miles. The average elevation of Lingya is 6 meters, or 20 feet. Name The district is named after a traditional community on the coast called "Lingyaliao" (; ) or (), after the similar-sounding (), which refers to a place where fishermen would put their nets after use. Taiwan has a Christian minority, making up about 3.9% of its population. Roughly half of Taiwan's Christians are Catholic, and half Protestant. Kaohsiung Metro () is a rapid transit and light rail system covering the metropolitan area of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Its rapid transit network is known as Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit or Kaohsiung MRT.
