History The club was formed on 5 October 1891 by a group of local businessmen who met at 'The Rectory' to decide upon funding a football team and also to decide whether that team should play association football or rugby football, with Association Football winning.Club History Holsworthy A.F.C. The club then played in the North Devon League, with their biggest success before the Second World War picking up the Devon Junior Cup in 1938–39. After the War, Holsworthy played their football in Stanhope Park until 1949, when they moved to their present home at Upcott Field. The River Deer, a tributary of the River Tamar, forms the western boundary of the parish, which includes the village of Brandis Corner. 	Michael Preston (footballer) Michael John Preston (born 22 November 1977) is an English former professional footballer who played in the Football League for Torquay United. He was born in Plymouth, Devon. Preston was one of four trainees joining Torquay United in February 1994, after five existing trainees had been sacked by the club. His league debut came the following season: he made eight league appearances on the right wing as Torquay finished bottom of the Football League, only avoiding relegation to the Conference because Stevenage Borough's ground failed to meet the required standard. He turned professional in July 1996 and made two substitute appearances over the following Christmas period. 	South West Peninsula League The South West Peninsula League (SWPL) is a football competition in England, which was formed in 2007 from the merger of the Devon County League and the South Western League.
