Hokie Bird
The HokieBird is the official mascot of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in Blacksburg, Virginia. The successor to Virginia Tech's Fighting Gobblers, the HokieBird was created in 1981 and has retained its current appearance since 1987. A large anthropomorphic turkey, the HokieBird has become a cultural phenomenon, making appearances in media, children's books, and public events. Notably, the HokieBird has been featured in a 2003 episode of Animal Planet's "Turkey Secrets", and was deemed by US government officials as the "supreme leader and god of all turkeys" during a pardoning ceremony around Thanksgiving. The Virginia Tech Hokies are the athletic teams representing the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in intercollegiate athletics. The Hokies participate in the NCAA's Division I Atlantic Coast Conference in 22 varsity sports. Virginia Tech's men's sports are football, basketball, baseball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and wrestling. Old Hokie
"Old Hokie" is a spirited cheer, often used by fans of Virginia Tech's athletic teams. It was coined by Oscar M. Stull (Class of 1896) in a winning student body contest entry to mark the changing of the university's name from Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (VAMC) to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and Agricultural and Mechanical College (VPI) in 1896. According to Stull, "Hokie" is a nonsensical word he made up purely as an attention-getter. In Stull's original version of Old Hokie, several words were spelled differently including "Hokie" itself. The current version adds the 'e' to Hokie and also adds "Team! Team! Team!". After chanting the last line, students hold one hand against a fist with an outward facing thumb to symbolize a turkey and wiggle their fingers. One person shouts, "ONE, TWO! ONE, TWO!" "Enter Sandman" is a song by American heavy metal band Metallica. It is the opening track and lead single from their self-titled fifth album, released in 1991. Sir Purr
Sir Purr is the mascot of the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League. He is an anthropomorphic, anthropomorphized Black panther, panther wearing a Panthers football jersey, No.00. On his page at the Panthers' web site, he describes his favorites snacks as "birds like Atlanta Falcons, falcons and Philadelphia Eagles, eagles and Seattle Seahawks, seahawks." He has a running rivalry with Jaxson de Ville, the mascot of the Jacksonville Jaguars (the Panthers' expansion brethren). The Carolina Panthers are a professional American football team based in Charlotte, North Carolina. Jaxson De Ville
Jaxson de Ville is the mascot of the Jacksonville Jaguars, a National Football League football franchise. His name is spelled "Jaxson" because Jacksonville, Florida, is often shortened to "Jax." He is an anthropomorphic jaguar and is yellow with teal patches. He wears sunglasses, a Jaguars jersey, long shorts, and black and teal sneakers. The back of his jersey is typical: it reads "Jaxson" with his number, 00, but the front has a paw print. National Cheerleading Association
The US National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) was established as a way to bring cheerleaders together to learn new skills. Since 1951, the NCA has held summer camps, and is credited with the invention of the herkie jump, the pom pom, the spirit stick and being the first uniform manufacturer. History The NCA was founded in 1950 by the "Grandfather" of cheerleading, Lawrence "Herkie" Herkimer, a former member of the Spirit Squad at Southern Methodist University. The NCA, incorporated in 1961, is the first organization to hold cheer camps with the purpose of bringing cheerleaders together to learn new skills under qualified instructors and compete against other schools in dance, jumps, tumbling and stunting.
