Hobart Cup
The Hobart Cup is a Tasmanian Racing Club Group 3 Thoroughbred horse race held as an open handicap race over a distance of 2400 metres at Elwick Racecourse in Glenorchy, Tasmania, Australia. The Cup is usually held on the first or second Monday in February. Total prizemoney is A$250,000. History The 1972 winner of this race, Piping Lane, went on to win the Melbourne Cup later in the year. The Assyrian is the only other horse to win both the Melbourne Cup and Hobart cup in 1882/83. In the past the race has been held on the Australia Day holiday. It is part of the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival, and is also one of Tasmania's main annual social events. The Assyrian (horse)
The Assyrian was an Australian bred Thoroughbred racehorse owned by CS Agnew and trained by J.E. Savill that won the 1882 Melbourne Cup being ridden by C Hutchins, presumably named after the Assyrians of Mesopotamia and their ancient empires. In the final stages of the 1882 Melbourne Cup, The Assyrian drew clear to defeat Stockwell by half a length, and send the heavily backed Gudarz into third place. Elwick Racecourse
Elwick Racecourse (currently also known by its sponsored name of Ladbrokes Park Elwick) is a Thoroughbred horse-racing venue located on Goodwood Road within Glenorchy, Tasmania, Australia. It is located in close proximity to the Brooker Highway, Hobart Showground, Derwent Entertainment Centre, Glenorchy Art and Sculpture Park and the River Derwent. The Racecourse has a picturesque outlook across the river, as well as being dominated by views of kunanyi / Mount Wellington. Elwick features at least 110 race meetings and 210 trial days a year, but is most well known for hosting the Hobart Cup. Design Ladbrokes Park Elwick is an approximately egg shaped anti-clockwise circuit with four straight starting lengths, and seven starting positions. Melbourne Cup
The Melbourne Cup is a Thoroughbred horse race held in Melbourne, Australia. It is a 3200-metre race for three-year-olds and over, conducted by the Victoria Racing Club on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It is the richest "two-mile" handicap in the world and one of the richest turf races. Piping Lane
Piping Lane (foaled 1966, died 1996) was a brown Australian Thoroughbred racehorse gelding by Lanesborough out of the mare Londonderry Air by Piping Time. Piping Lane came to prominence by winning the 1972 Melbourne Cup over 3,200 metres at odds of 40/1. Piping Lane was owned by R.E. Prevost of Epping Forest, Tasmania and his racing had been confined to Tasmania, where he had won $12,638, prior to April 1972. He was then purchased for $6,000 by Ray W. Trinder, then 69, and a licensed amateur jockey and also an owner-trainer. Trinder had purchased the horse with the specific aim of winning the Melbourne Cup. Piping Lane was sent to be trained by George Hanlon of Melbourne. He was allotted 48 kg in the cup and with many top jockeys unable to ride at this weight John Letts of Adelaide South Australia was given the ride. Group races, also known as Pattern races, or Graded races in some jurisdictions, are the highest level of races in Thoroughbred horse racing.
