Hjalmar Kjær
__NOTOC__ Hjalmar Kjær was a Danish architect who worked extensively in Odense and made notable contributions to architecture in Denmark in the 19th and 20th centuries. HJalmar Kjær was the son of soap manufacturer Hans Kjær and Kathrine Rasmussen. He attended a technical college before he was admitted to the preparatory course of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1894 and graduated as an architect in May 1896. Kjær established a design office in Odense in 1898 and lived there for most of his life. His works in Odense spans residential and public buildings, bridges, roads and streets. Outside Odense he designed buildings in the cities of Copenhagen and Aarhus and restored several manors on Fuenen and Lolland. Among them are two very different Catholic Apostolic Churches in Copenhagen and Aarhus respectively, the St. Nicholas' Church in Aarhus and the church on ''Krigersvej'' in Østerbro, Copenhagen. Knuthenborg
Knuthenborg is a manor house located north of Maribo on the Danish island of Lolland. Originally known as Årsmarke, it was first mentioned in 1372. Today's building was completed in 1866 to a design by Henrik Steffens Sibbern. The medieval manor of Årsmarke, with its more than 300 years of history, was once Denmark's largest private estate; it is now part of Knuthenborg Safaripark. The exotic shrubs and trees planted during the era of the Counts of Knuthenborg are situated on the grounds. Geography The 2,000 acre estate is surrounded by beech forests. Since 1969, Knuthenborg Safari Park has attracted large numbers of visitors who come to see some 40 species of exotic animals and birds as well as special attractions for children. Skansen (Aarhus)
Skansen (; "the Sconce") is the oldest open-air museum and zoo in Sweden located on the island Djurgården in Stockholm, Sweden. It was opened on 11 October 1891 by Artur Hazelius (1833–1901) to show the way of life in the different parts of Sweden before the industrial era. The term "skansen" has become a generic term referring to other open-air museums and collections of historic structures, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe, but also in the United States, e.g. Old World Wisconsin and Fairplay, Colorado. Skansepalæet
Skansepalæet ( Lit.: Sconce Palace) is a residential building in Aarhus, Denmark situated in the Frederiksbjerg neighborhood. The building comprises ''Standvejen'' 34-36 and ''Heibergsgade'' 25-27. Skansepalæet was built in 1908 by designs of the Danish architect Hjalmar Kjær as a hotel in connection with the Danish National Exhibition of 1909. Today the building is an apartment complex owned by its residents. History The building is named for the sconce erected by Albrecht von Wallenstein on the site in 1627 when he occupied Aarhus during the Thirty Years' War. The fortification was used as a base for raids throughout Jutland until the war ended and it was abandoned. The area was at the time a part of the Marselisborg Manor. The Danish National Exhibition of 1909 or The National Exhibition in Aarhus 1909 (Danish: Landsudstillingen i Aarhus) was an industry, crafts and culture exhibition held in Aarhus, Denmark in 1909 from 18 May to 3 October. The exhibition displayed some 1850 individual works by architects, artists, craftsmen and businesses and attracted 650.000 visitors. The project was a large undertaking for the city with long-lasting effects on cultural institutions and short-term economic problems. The exhibition fairgrounds was named The white City (Danish: Den Hvide By) based on the architectural expression chosen by the leading architect Anton Rosen. The exhibition was generally received well in the press and was widely considered a success.
