Hindscarth And Robinson From Newlands
Hindscarth is a mountain between the valleys of Buttermere and Newlands Valley, Newlands, in the north-western part of the English Lake District. The fell's name is derived from two words from the Old Norse language, ''Hind'' and ''Skarth'', and means the pass used by the red deer. Topography The North Western Fells occupy the area between the rivers Derwent and Cocker, a broadly oval swathe of hilly country, elongated on a north-south axis. Two roads cross from east to west, dividing the fells into three convenient groups. Hindscarth stands in the southern sector. The principal ridge in this group of fells runs east from Buttermere, climbing over Robinson (Lake District), Robinson, Hindscarth and Dale Head. It then turns north, descending gradually toward Derwentwater, the main tops being High Spy, Maiden Moor and Catbells. Catbells
Cat Bells is a fell in the English Lake District in the county of Cumbria. It has a height of and is one of the most popular fells in the area. It is situated on the western shore of Derwentwater within of the busy tourist town of Keswick. Its distinctive shape catches the attention of many visitors to the Lakes who feel compelled to climb to the summit after seeing it from the viewpoint of Friars' Crag on the opposite side of Derwentwater. High Spy
High Spy is a fell in the English Lake District it is situated on the ridge that separates the Newlands Valley from Borrowdale, eight kilometres (five miles) south of Keswick. Topography The fell reaches a height of 653 metres (2142 feet) and is defended by crags to the east and west as it falls away steeply to the valleys. It is a distinctive fell that has 148 metres (486 feet) of topographic prominence from the higher adjoining fell of Dale Head and so misses being a Marilyn by only two metres. Geologically the fell is made up of Borrowdale Volcanics. The meaning of the fell's name is obscure but may mean a “lookout post”, referring to some lost fort in the area. Olistostrome
An olistostrome is a sedimentary deposit composed of a chaotic mass of heterogeneous material, such as blocks and mud, known as olistoliths, that accumulates as a semifluid body by submarine gravity sliding or slumping of the unconsolidated sediments. Newlands Horseshoe
The Newlands horseshoe is a circular walk in the Lake District, incorporating the main peaks surrounding the Newlands Valley. Standard round The regular horseshoe covers six peaks, and approximately 9.4 miles or 15.1 kilometers of walking. It includes the fells Catbells, Maiden Moor,(1687 ft), High Spy (2143 ft), Dale Head (2473 ft), Hindscarth (2385 ft), and Robinson. The walk may be extended by another five or so miles, and by four more peaks, by including an extra traverse from Knott Rigg to Causey Pike; but the Horseshoe proper - culminating in what Wainwright called “the deep trench confined by Maiden Moor and Hindscarth” - surrounds and encloses Upper Newlands itself.
