Hillcrest Historic District
Hillcrest Historic District is an historic neighborhood in Little Rock, Arkansas that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 18, 1990. It is often referred to as Hillcrest by the people who live there, although the district's boundaries actually encompass several neighborhood additions that were once part of the incorporated town of Pulaski Heights. The town of Pulaski Heights was annexed to the city of Little Rock in 1916. The Hillcrest Residents Association uses the tagline "Heart of Little Rock" because the area is located almost directly in the center of the city and was the first street car suburb in Little Rock and among the first of neighborhoods in Arkansas. Retan House
The Retan House is a historic house at 2510 South Broadway in Little Rock, Arkansas. It is a modest two-story frame structure, with shallow-pitch hip roof with broad eaves. A single-story porch extends across the front, with a broad gable roof supported by stone piers. The entrance is on the left side, and there is a three-part window at the center of the front under the porch. Above the porch are a band of four multi-pane windows in the Prairie School style. The house was built in 1915 to a design by Charles L. Thompson, and is one of his finer examples of the Prairie School style. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Charles L. Thompson and associates is an architectural group that was established in Arkansas since the late 1800s. It is now known as Cromwell Architects Engineers, Inc.. This article is about Thompson and associates' work as part of one architectural group, and its predecessor and descendant firms, including under names Charles L. Thompson, Thompson & Harding, Sanders & Ginocchio, and Thompson, Sanders and Ginocchio. The firm was the "most prolific architectural firm" practicing in Arkansas in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and produced more than 2,000 buildings. The architectural group used standard and custom designs that both led and evolved with changing architectural taste in Arkansas. The group built a wide range of types of works, including large public buildings, commercial buildings, mansions, and small houses. The Williamson House is a historic house at 325 Fairfax Street in Little Rock, Arkansas, USA. It is a two-story wood-frame structure, with a gabled roof, clapboarded exterior, and brick foundation. Its roof has exposed rafter ends in the Craftsman style, and a wraparound porch supported by simple square columns. The projecting entry porch has a gable with decorative false half-timbering, and is supported by grouped columns. The house was designed by Little Rock architect Theodore Sanders and was built about 1911. Photos of the house were used in promotional materials for the subdivision in which it is located. It is a large two-story wood-frame structure, built in 1911 in the Dutch Colonial style to a design by architect Charles L. Thompson. Werner Knoop House
The Werner Knoop House is a historic house at 6 Ozark Point in Little Rock, Arkansas. Built in 1936–37, it is a rare example of Art Moderne residential architecture in the city. It is a two-story L-shaped structure, its exterior finished in brick with flush mortar joints and painted white, with asymmetrically arranged steel-frame windows in a variety of sizes and shapes. Its entrance is recessed in a rectangular opening framed by stone, immediately to the right of the projecting two-car garage. The house was built for Werner Knoop, owner of a local construction company, to a design by the local firm Brueggeman, Swaim & Allen. Queen Anne Style Architecture In The United States
Queen Anne style architecture was one of a number of popular Victorian architectural styles that emerged in the United States during the period from roughly 1880 to 1910. Popular there during this time, it followed the Second Empire and Stick styles and preceded the Richardsonian Romanesque and Shingle styles. Sub-movements of Queen Anne include the Eastlake movement. The style bears almost no relationship to the original Queen Anne style architecture in Britain (a toned-down version of English Baroque that was used mostly for gentry houses) which appeared during the time of Queen Anne, who reigned from 1702 to 1714, nor of Queen Anne Revival (which appeared in the latter 19th century there). The American style covers a wide range of picturesque buildings with "free Renaissance" (non-Gothic Revival) details, rather than being a specific formulaic style in its own right.
