The Town of Hiles is in Wood County, Wisconsin, United States. Its population was 188 at the 2000 census. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, Hiles has an area of 35.3 square miles (91.5 km2), of which 34.8 square miles (90.2 km2) is land and 0.5 square miles (1.2 km2) of it (1.36%) is water. History The six-mile square that would become the Town of Hiles was first surveyed in the summer of 1851 by a crew working for the US government. Around New Year's Day of 1852, another crew marked all of its the section corners of the six-mile square, traversing the woods and swamps, measuring with chain and compass. Hiles is a town in Forest County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 311 at the 2010 census. The unincorporated communities of Atkins and Hiles are located in the town. History Hiles is named for Franklin P. Hiles, a major landowner when the town was organized in 1903. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and , or 6.75%, is water. Demographics At the 2000 census, there were 404 people, 199 households and 143 families residing in the town. The population density was 3.1 per square mile (1.2/km2). Barbara Hiles BagenalShe was known by both her maiden and married name (1891–1984) was an artist associated with members of the Bloomsbury Group, primarily Vanessa Bell and Saxon Sydney-Turner. She was a long-time friend of fellow "Bohemian style, Bohemian" and artist Dora Carrington. Dianne Hiles
Dianne Marian Hiles is an Australian accountant and human rights and refugee activist who co-founded ChilOut, which has advocated for the release of children and families from immigration detention centres since 2001. In recognition of her work with this organisation, as well as with Amnesty International, board of A Just Australia, and the Evatt Foundation, Hiles was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2010. Career Hiles has been a qualified accountant for over 30 years. She holds a Masters in Human Rights from the University of Sydney. She was the mother of a four-year-old when she viewed the ABC TV Four Corners program about six-year-old refugee child Shayan Badraie, who had been held in immigration detention for two years. George Hiles
George Hiles (October 3, 1825 – March 8, 1896) was a businessman, land speculator, and politician. Hiles was born in Farmington, Michigan. He moved to Wisconsin in 1844 settling in Baraboo where he operated a sawmill. In 1850, he moved to Wood County, where he helped found the sawmill town Dexterville, invested in the mills of Pittsville, and owned a mineral water spring in Arcadia. He represented Marathon and Wood counties in the Wisconsin State Assembly as a Democrat in 1867. He was defeated by George R. Gardner for the seat in 1883. In the 1870s and 1880s he became involved in railroads. He built a major portion of the Green Bay, Winona and St. Paul Railroad, and constructed the Milwaukee, Dexterville, and Northern Railroad which was later acquired by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. Henry Hiles
Henry Hiles (31 December 1826 – 20 October 1904) was an English composer, organist, writer, and music educator. Life He was born in Shrewsbury, Hiles was the youngest of six sons. His eldest brother, John Hiles, was known as an arranger of organ music and for authoring several catechisms. He began studying the piano at the age of 4 and began studying the organ just a few years later. He studied at the University of Oxford where he earned Bachelor of Music and Doctor of Music degrees. In 1892, he founded the Society of Professional Musicians. He held a number of church posts during his career, including serving as organist at the parish church at Bury, Lancashire (1845-47); Bishop Wearmouth; St Michael Wood Street, London (1859); St Thomas', Old Trafford, Manchester (1859-61); Bowdon parish church, Cheshire (1861-63); and St Paul's, Hulme, Manchester (1863-67).
