George Hiles
George Hiles (October 3, 1825 – March 8, 1896) was a businessman, land speculator, and politician. Hiles was born in Farmington, Michigan. He moved to Wisconsin in 1844 settling in Baraboo where he operated a sawmill. In 1850, he moved to Wood County, where he helped found the sawmill town Dexterville, invested in the mills of Pittsville, and owned a mineral water spring in Arcadia. He represented Marathon and Wood counties in the Wisconsin State Assembly as a Democrat in 1867. He was defeated by George R. Gardner for the seat in 1883. In the 1870s and 1880s he became involved in railroads. He built a major portion of the Green Bay, Winona and St. Paul Railroad, and constructed the Milwaukee, Dexterville, and Northern Railroad which was later acquired by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. Farmington, Michigan
Farmington is a city in Oakland County, Michigan, Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is a northern suburb of Metro Detroit. As of the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census, the population was 10,372. The Town of Hiles is in Wood County, Wisconsin, United States. Its population was 188 at the 2000 census. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, Hiles has an area of 35.3 square miles (91.5 km2), of which 34.8 square miles (90.2 km2) is land and 0.5 square miles (1.2 km2) of it (1.36%) is water. History The six-mile square that would become the Town of Hiles was first surveyed in the summer of 1851 by a crew working for the US government.
