Highland Park Community College, formerly Highland Park Junior College, was a public community college located in Highland Park, Michigan. Highland Park Community College was an urban campus and the focus of many efforts to benefit urban populations. History The college was founded in 1918 as Highland Park Junior College. On May 21, 1954, the college has its radio station, WHPR-FM, sign on. The college sold its radio station to R.J. Watkins Late Night Entertainment. The school was closed in 1996. The Highland Park Career Academy was brought in to replace it. Robert Elmes bought the campus for $18,000. Programs Among other programs the college had a nursing program. Highland Park, Michigan
Highland Park is a city in Wayne County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 8,977 at the 2020 census. Along with its neighbor of Hamtramck, Highland Park is an enclave city surrounded by the city of Detroit. History The area that was to become Highland Park began as a small farming community, on a large ridge at what is now Woodward Avenue and Highland, north of Detroit. In 1818, prominent Detroit judge Augustus B. Woodward bought the ridge, and platted the village of Woodwardville in 1825. The development of the village failed. Another Detroit judge, Benjamin F. H. Witherell, son of Michigan Supreme Court justice James Witherell, attempted to found a village platted as Cassandra on this site in 1836, but this plan also failed. WHPR-FM (88.1 FM) is an Urban Oldies and Talk radio station based in Highland Park, Michigan, owned and operated by R. J.'s Late Night Entertainment Corporation. History The station was founded May 21, 1954 by the Highland Park School District; the studio and transmitter were located at Highland Park High School, with the facilities operated by high school students to provide educational radio broadcasting to the community. When the high school relocated in 1977, the Wayne County Community College District took over the facility as well as the HPHS buildings. On December 20, 1994, the college closed down the campus, and the station was sold to R.J. Watkins, owner of local low-powered station W33BY (then on channel 68 as W68CH).
