Winchester is a town in Litchfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 10,224 at the 2020 census. The city of Winsted is located in Winchester. History Winchester was incorporated on May 21, 1771, and named after Winchester in England. Geography The town is in northeastern Litchfield County and is bordered to the south by the city of Torrington. It is northwest of Hartford, the state capital, and north of Waterbury. Winsted, with a population of 7,321 by far the largest community in Winchester, is in the eastern part of the town. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which are land and , or 3.87%, are water. Highland Lake, Crystal Lake, and Lake Winchester are three of the larger water bodies in the town.
