High Peak Junction
High Peak Junction, near Cromford, Derbyshire, England, is the name now used to describe the site where the former Cromford and High Peak Railway (C&HPR), whose workshops were located here, meets the Cromford Canal. It lies within Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, designated in 2001, and today marks the southern end of the High Peak Trail, a trail for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. The Derwent Valley Heritage Way also passes this point, and popular walks lead from here along the towpath in both directions. Cromford Railway Station
Cromford railway station is a Grade II listed railway station owned by Network Rail and managed by East Midlands Railway. It is located in the village of Cromford in Derbyshire, England. The station is on the Derwent Valley Line north of Derby towards Matlock. History Originally known as Cromford Bridge, it was opened by the Manchester, Buxton, Matlock and Midlands Junction Railway in 1849. This is one of the few stations on the line that has been preserved and is a Grade 2 listed building. It is said to have been designed by G. H. Stokes, son-in-law of Joseph Paxton. Manchester, Buxton, Matlock And Midlands Junction Railway
The Manchester, Buxton, Matlock and Midland Junction Railway ran from a junction with the Midland Railway at Ambergate to Rowsley north of Matlock and thence to Buxton. In time it would become part of the Midland Railway's main line between London and Manchester, but it was initially planned as a route from Manchester to the East of England, via the proposed Ambergate, Nottingham, Boston and Eastern Junction Railway which would meet it a little further north along the North Midland line at Ambergate. The Stockton and Darlington Railway (S&DR) was a railway company that operated in north-east England from 1825 to 1863. The world's first public railway to use steam locomotives, its first line connected coal mining, collieries near Shildon with Darlington and Stockton-on-Tees in County Durham, and was officially opened on 27 September 1825. The movement of coal to ships rapidly became a lucrative business, and the line was soon extended to a new port at Middlesbrough. Sir Richard Arkwright (23 December 1732 – 3 August 1792) was an English inventor and a leading entrepreneur during the early Industrial Revolution. He is credited as the driving force behind the development of the spinning frame, known as the water frame after it was adapted to use water power; and he patented a rotary carding engine to convert raw cotton to 'cotton lap' prior to spinning. Whaley Bridge () is a town and civil parish in the High Peak district of Derbyshire, England. Hurdlow Railway Station
Hurdlow railway station was near to the hamlet of Hurdlow within Hartington Middle Quarter civil parish, to the south east of Buxton, Derbyshire on the LNWR line to Ashbourne and the south. History It opened for goods in 1833 on the Cromford and High Peak Railway from Whaley Bridge to Cromford. Passenger service began in 1856, but it closed in 1877. When it became part of the Ashbourne Line, the LNWR opened it again in 1894. In some timetables it was listed as Hurdlow for Longnor and Monyash,; the platforms and buildings were of timber construction, as in all the stations on the line. From the summit at above sea level at Dowlow Halt the line descended at 1 in 60 to Hurdlow.
