Thor Heyerdahl
Thor Heyerdahl KStJ (; 6 October 1914 – 18 April 2002) was a Norwegian adventurer and ethnographer with a background in zoology, botany and geography. Heyerdahl is notable for his ''Kon-Tiki'' expedition in 1947, in which he sailed 8,000 km (5,000 mi) across the Pacific Ocean in a hand-built raft from South America to the Tuamotu Islands. The expedition was designed to demonstrate that ancient people could have made long sea voyages, creating contacts between societies. This was linked to a diffusionist model of cultural development. Heyerdahl made other voyages to demonstrate the possibility of contact between widely separated ancient peoples, notably the ''Ra II'' expedition of 1970, when he sailed from the west coast of Africa to Barbados in a papyrus reed boat. He was appointed a government scholar in 1984. He died on 18 April 2002 in Colla Micheri, Italy, while visiting close family members. Hans Olaf Halvor Heyerdahl (8 July 1857 – 10 October 1913) was a Norwegian Realist painter. His work was characterized by naturalism and focused largely on portraits and landscape paintings. Biography Heyerdahl was born in Smedjebacken, Sweden. He was the son of and Hilda Margretha Haak (1834–1917). His father was a prominent engineer and architect. In 1859, the family moved to Drammen, where his father took up the joint posts of city engineer and fire chief. Heyerdahl was educated in Christiania (now Oslo), Munich (1874–1877) and Paris (1878–1880). He began his education with the intent of following in his father's footsteps, but soon discovered that he was more attracted to drawing and art. In 1873, he entered the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry and studied under Peder Cappelen Thurmann, a landscape artist trained in Düsseldorf. Severin Andreas Heyerdahl
Severin Andreas Heyerdahl (28 August 1870 – 26 June 1940) was a Norwegian was a physician, radiologist and hospital director. He was a pioneer in the use of radiology and radiation therapy in Norway. Biography He was born in Kristiania (now Oslo), Norway. He was the son of Severin Andreas Heyerdahl (1818-75) and Ragna Møller (1832-1926). He took his examen artium at Aars og Voss skole in 1888. He was hired as the manager of the x-ray department at Rikshospitalet in 1899. He took his dr.med. degree at the University of Oslo in 1910. Heyerdahl started with radium treatment at the Rikshospitalet in 1912. Together with Hans L. C. Huitfeldt, he co-founded the cancer treatment clinic ''Kristiania Radium-Institutt'' in 1913. Elisabeth Susanne Heyerdahl (1858–1921) was a Norwegian Conservative politician, teacher and a strong supporter of women's involvement in politics. She was one of the first women to be elected to Christiania's City Council. Anders Heyerdahl (29 October 1832 – 3 December 1918) was a Norwegian violinist, composer and folk music collector. He was born in what is today Aurskog-Høland, and was the younger brother of engineer Halvor Emil Heyerdahl. He studied music mainly under Carl Arnold. In addition to his own compositions, he spent the years 1856 to 1861 collecting folk music from Hallingdal and Aurskog. The work was published as ''Norske Dansar og Slåtter''. Halvor Heyerdahl Rasch (8 January 1805 – 26 August 1883) was a Norwegian zoologist and educator. He was born at Eidsberg in Østfold, Norway. Rasch studied botany and zoology at the University of Christiania (now University of Oslo). He was a professor of zoology and natural science at the University of Oslo from 1852 to 1874, having previously been a lector since 1847. An avid hunter and sportsman, he published the book ''Jagten i Norge'' (1845) as well as works about livestock, oyster cultivation and beekeeping. He was among the founders of the ''Centralforeningen for Udbredelse af Legemsøvelser og Vaabenbrug'', a precursor to the Norwegian Confederation of Sports, in 1861. The show centers on fourth grader Arnold Shortman, who lives with his grandparents in an inner-city tenement. Episodes center on his experiences navigating urban life while dealing with the problems he and his friends encounter. Many episodes however, focus on other characters, including major, secondary, supporting, and even minor characters. Bartlett's idea for the show is based on a minor character named Arnold whom he created while working on ''Pee-wee's Playhouse''.
