Hessen-Pokal
The Hessen-Pokal (Hesse Cup) is a Group 3 flat horse race in Germany open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. It is run at Frankfurt over a distance of 2,000 metres (about 1¼ miles), and it is scheduled to take place each year in November. The race was moved to Krefeld and renamed ''Niederrhein-Pokal'' (Lower Rhine Cup) in 2014. History The event was established in 1967, and it was originally called the Concentra-Pokal. It used to be held in July, and was initially contested over 2,550 metres. It was cut to 2,500 metres in 1971. The race was given Group 3 status in 1973. It was shortened to 2,000 metres in 1974. It was renamed after Hesse, the German state where Frankfurt is located, in 1979. The Hessen-Pokal was promoted to Group 2 level in 1987. It was relegated back to Group 3 in 1989. Star Appeal
Star Appeal (1970-1987) was an Irish-bred Thoroughbred and sire who won top-class races in four countries. In 1975, he became the first German-trained racehorse to win the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Racing career Star Appeal was initially raced in Ireland, where his first trainer was John Oxx senior. He then moved to Germany where he achieved success with his third trainer, Theo Grieper. Hayley Turner
Hayley Turner (born 3 January 1983) is an English jockey who competes in flat racing. Originally from Nottingham, she is based in Newmarket. In 2008 Turner became the first woman to ride 100 UK flat race winners during a calendar year. She went on to win eight Group races, including two Group 1 races and a Grade 1 race. She retired from racing in 2015 and became a regular contributor to ITV Racing. She came out of retirement in 2018 and since then has ridden three winners at Royal Ascot. Background Turner was born two miles from Nottingham Racecourse in north Nottinghamshire, one of six daughters of Kate and Richard Turner. Her mother was a riding instructor and she learnt to ride at an early age. Peter Walwyn
Peter Tyndall Walwyn, (1 July 1933 – 7 December 2017) was a British racehorse trainer. He was based at stables in the Lambourn, Berkshire, area and enjoyed his period of greatest success in the mid-1970s when he was British flat racing Champion Trainer twice. Early life Walwyn came from a racing family – he was the cousin of trainer Fulke Walwyn. His father was Charles "Taffy" Walwyn DSO MC. He was educated at Charterhouse School. Career His first job in racing was as assistant to trainer Geoffrey Brooke. He then held the licence for Helen Johnson Houghton, twin sister to Fulke Walwyn (women were not recognised as licensed trainers by the Jockey Club in those days). Jimmy Quinn (jockey)
James Quinn (born 20 May 1967) is an Irish professional horse racing flat jockey. Quinn was born in Rochestown, New Ross, County Wexford, Ireland. He moved to England as an apprentice jockey in 1985 and works as a freelance jockey based in Newmarket. In four seasons (1996, 2002, 2004 and 2009) Quinn clocked up over 1,000 rides. In an interview with ''The Guardian'' in 2006, he defended the practice of riding in afternoon and evening race meetings on the same day, even if it meant driving long distances between meetings. Andreas Schütz
Andreas Schütz (born 19 February 1968) is a Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. From a prominent racing family, he is the fourth generation to train professionally. Andreas Schütz started out as an amateur jockey, winning four German championships from 1984–1987 and the European championship in 1987. In 1992 he began working as an assistant trainer for his father Bruno Schütz who had built one of the Germany's most successful public training stables. Due to health problems, his father retired and in 1998 Andreas took over the running of the stable. Highly successful, Andreas Schütz has won numerous German Group one races including the five wins in both the Deutsches Derby and the Preis der Diana. Andrasch Starke
Andrasch Starke (born 4 January 1974, in Germany) is a jockey in international Thoroughbred horse racing. Starke began racing at age fifteen as an amateur and since turning professional has won the German riding championship six times. He has competed in Canada and the United States and has won races in Dubai, France, Italy, and Singapore. Michael Roberts (born 17 May 1954) is a South African jockey currently a trainer in South Africa. He lives with his wife Verna and two daughters, Melanie and Carolyn. John Lasarus Williams (29 October 1924 – 15 June 2004), known as John L, was a Welsh nationalist activist. Williams was born in Llangoed on Anglesey, but lived most of his life in nearby Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. In his youth, he was a keen footballer, and he also worked as a teacher.
