Hermínia Da Cruz Fortes
Hermínia da Cruz Fortes, better known as Hermínia d'Antónia de Sal, (September 17, 1941—7 February 2010) was a Cape Verdean singer. She was the cousin of Cesária Évora, and daughter of António da Rocha Évora and Antónia da Cruz Fortes. Hermínia was born in the island of São Vicente; she lost her mother when she was twelve, and later lived with her aunt in the island of Sal. She returned to her native island when she was 33. She received the opportunity to become a singer, and she recorded morna songs at Rádio Clube do Mindelo studios. The singer had also worked in specials with her cousin Cesária at Hotel Porto Grande, at the time the largest in the city of Mindelo. Although she started singing when she was a child, Hermínia d'Antónia recorded an album when she was 53; she also recorded with the musician Vasco Martins. Sal (Portuguese for "salt") is an island in Cape Verde. Sal is a tourist destination with white sandy beaches and over 350 days of sunshine a year. It is one of the three sandy eastern islands of the Cape Verde archipelago in the central Atlantic Ocean, off the west coast of Africa. Cesária Évora
Cesária Évora GCIH (; 27 August 194117 December 2011), more commonly known as Cize, was a Cape Verdean singer-songwriter. She received a Grammy Award in 2004 for her album '' Voz d'Amor''. Nicknamed the "Barefoot Diva" for performing without shoes, she was known as the "Queen of Morna". Évora began singing as a young woman in bars in her hometown of Mindelo, and came to international prominence in the 1990s. Biography Early life Cesária Évora was born on 27 August 1941 in Mindelo, São Vicente, Cape Verde. When she was seven years old her father, Justino da Cruz Évora, who was a part-time musician, died, and at the age of ten she was placed in an orphanage, as her mother Dona Joana could not raise all six children. Rádio Clube Do Mindelo
Rádio Clube do Mindelo was a local radio station in Cape Verde broadcasting in the Portuguese language. A shortwave station (CR4AB), it could be heard 7092kc, and later 4719kc. The station served Mindelo as well as a part of the entire Barlavento island group including Santo Antão, São Vicente and São Nicolau. It was renamed Barlavento Radio in 195The station was located in a building near downtown Mindelo that is now the Centro Nacional de Artesanato, Centro Nacional de Artesanato e Design. It broadcast music, especially traditional Cape Verdean, as well as programs from around the world. History In the early years of the station, Hermínia da Cruz Fortes recorded a couple of morna songs at the station. Vasco Martins is a Cape Verdean musician and composer. Born in Queluz, Portugal, in 1956, he lives now in Calhau, Cape Verde. Biography Self-taught, he began his studies in 1974. He was a member of the band Colá in 1976, but then went to Portugal where he studied with Fernando Lopes Graça and later to France to pursue his musical education with Henri-Claude Fantapié. In 1979 he recorded his first LP. He returned to Cape Verde, and it is there that he has created most of his work as a composer and instrumentist, but also as musicologist and producer, he organized and founded the Baía das Gatas Music Festival along with his friends in 1984, the first music festival in the nation. He released more albums including ''Quinto Mundo'' (1989), ''Eternal Cycle'' (1995), ''Memórias Atlânticas'' (''Memories from the Atlantic'') (1998) and ''Lunário Perpétio'' (2001).
