Hermann Edward Hasse
Hermann Edward Hasse (12 January 1836 – 29 October 1915) was an American lichenologist.H. E. Hasse, Lichenist, Kerry Knudsen, Opuscula Philolichenum, 8: 59-66. 2010/ref> He wrote two important texts and numerous articles in his field. '' Hassea'', which is a genus of fungi in the class Dothideomycetes, and ''Lecidea hassei'', a lichen that grows inside solid rock ( endolithic lichen), were both named in his honor. He principally did his research in southern California. His correspondents included cryptogamic botanist William Gilson Farlow and lichenologist George Knox Merrill. Publications In 1913, Hasse published ''The Lichen Flora Of Southern California'', a flora of the lichens of southern California covering about 400 taxa. A Flora is a book or other work which describes the plant species occurring in an area or time period, often with the aim of allowing identification. The term is usually capitalized to distinguish it from the use of "flora" to mean the plants rather than their descriptions. Some classic and modern Floras are listed below. Traditionally Floras are books, but some are now published on CD-ROM or websites. The area that a Flora covers can be either geographically or politically defined. Floras usually require some specialist botanical knowledge to use with any effectiveness. A Flora often contains diagnostic keys. In biology, a taxon (back-formation from ''taxonomy''; plural taxa) is a group of one or more populations of an organism or organisms seen by taxonomists to form a unit. George Knox Merrill
George Knox Merrill (16 October 1864 –21 October 1927) was an American lichenologist. He was a leading exponent of lichenology in the early 20th century. He was particularly interested in species of the family Cladoniaceae, in which he published several new species, varieties, and forms. In 1909 he started publishing ''Lichenes Exsiccati'', which he continued intermittently until 1927; 400 specimens were presented in this exsiccata series. Merrill was born in Lewiston, Maine, to John Merrill (a farmer) and Jane Prescott. He attended public schools in Lewiston, and later, in Boston where he and his mother moved after his father died. He entered Harvard University but never finished a degree there. Around this time he took up an interest in journalism and started writing articles for the newspaper ''The Beverly Citizen''.
