Heritage Foundation Pakistan
Heritage Foundation of Pakistan is a Pakistani heritage and humanitarian aid organization founded by Yasmeen Lari and Suhail Zaheer Lari in 1980. The organization's mission is "to document and conserve the traditional and historic built environment of Pakistan; create an awareness of Pakistan’s rich and diverse historic architecture and art; and to promote cultural heritage for social integration, peace and development." Saving cultural heritage buildings In 1984, when there were plans to demolish the historically significant Hindu Gymkhana, Karachi building because it had somewhat deteriorated due to lack of maintenance, Heritage Foundation Pakistan intervened to save it. Yasmeen Lari
Yasmeen Lari (born 1941; ur, ) is Pakistan's first female architect. She is best known for her involvement in the intersection of architecture and social justice. Since her official retirement from architectural practice in 2000, her UN-recognized NGO Heritage Foundation Pakistan has been taking on humanitarian relief work and historical conservation projects in rural villages all around Pakistan. She was awarded the prestigious Fukuoka Prize in 2016. Early life Yasmeen Lari was born in 1941 in the town of Dera Ghazi Khan, and spent her early years in and around Lahore in a renowned clan of Iraqi Biradari. Her father Zafarul Ahsan, an ICS officer, was working on major development projects in Lahore and other cities, through which Lari was exposed to architecture. Suhail Zaheer Lari
Suhail Zaheer Lari (13 November 19365 December 2020; ur, ) was a Pakistani historian and author who focused on research and documentation of the history of the Sindh region in Southern Pakistan. He was a co-founder of the Heritage Foundation of Pakistan, a conservation organization which sought to drive awareness to the region's art, architecture, and cultural heritage. Early life Lari was born in Gorakhpur, in modern-day Uttar Pradesh state in India, on 13 November 1936, in what was then undivided British India and was raised in Allahabad. His mother, Qabila Khatoon, was a homemaker while his father, Zaheer ul Hasnain Lari was a judge and lawyer. The family was known to be close to India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. The family did not leave for Pakistan during the Partition of India in 1947, but, remained in Allahabad until 1950, when they moved to Lahore and later to Karachi. Hindu Gymkhana, Karachi
The Hindu Gymkhana ( Sindhi:هندو جمخانه; ) is a colonial-era building located on Sarwar Shaheed Road in Karachi, Pakistan. It was the first public building in Karachi to adopt the Mughal-Revival architectural style. It was established in 1925 by the Karachi's Hindus as an exclusive club for their community.
