Hergisheim
Hergisheim is a house in Stavern, Norway. It is classified as an artist's home because the novelist Gisken Wildenvey (1895–1985) and her husband the poet Herman Wildenvey (1885–1959) lived in the house from 1927 onward. The Wildenveys came to Stavern in 1923 in search of a country house. The apartment where they had lived in Copenhagen from 1913 to 1920 had burned down, and the insurance settlement served as initial capital for construction. They moved in for Christmas in 1927, having previously rented in Stavern. The house is described in Gisken Wildenvey's memoirs ''Kjærlighet varer lengst'' (Love Lasts Longest, 1975) and in Tom Lotherington's biography of Herman Wildenvey, ''Wildenvey – et dikterliv'' (Wildenvey: A Poet's Life, 1993). Herman Wildenvey
Herman Wildenvey (20 July 1885 – 27 September 1959), born Herman Theodor Portaas, was one of the most prominent Norwegian poets of the twentieth century. During his lifetime he published 44 books of his own poetry, in addition to translations of William Shakespeare, Ernest Hemingway, and Heinrich Heine. He was married to the novelist Gisken Wildenvey. Biography Wildenvey was born at Mjøndalen in Nedre Eiker, near the city of Drammen in Buskerud, Norway. He was the son of Lauritz Portaas and Hanna Kristine Grosvold. He was born outside of marriage. His mother remained unmarried while his father married her younger sister. His childhood home, from which he got his surname at birth, was called ''Portåsen''. He emigrated to the United States in 1904, but returned to Norway during the summer of 1906. Gisken Wildenvey
Gisken Wildenvey (23 March 1892 – 14 January 1985) was a Norwegian novelist and author of short stories. Jonette Pauline Andreassen was born at Austvågøy at Vågan in Lofoten, Norway. She was the daughter of farmer Anton Lauritz Andreassen and Inger Martha Jentoft Petersen. The name Gisken had been given to her by the poet Herman Wildenvey whom she married in 1912. From 1927 they lived at Hergisheim in Stavern. She made her literary debut in 1925 with the short story collection ''Bedaarere''. Herman Wildenvey Poetry Award
The Herman Wildenvey Poetry Award ( no, Herman Wildenveys Poesipris) is a Norwegian award. It is conferred every year on July 20, the birthday of the poet Herman Wildenvey, in an event held at Hergisheim. The award consists of NOK 15,000 and a bronze relief plaque designed by the sculptor Ørnulf Bast. The award is given to a person or institution that has helped foster interest in Herman Wildenvey's poetry and stimulated efforts for his poetic values to hold a greater place in everyday life. The award was conferred for the first time in 1996 by the Wildenvey Society ( no, Wildenvey-selskapet). After this society became defunct in 2014, the award still continued at the initiative of the former directors of the society. Stavern
Stavern is a small water-side town in Larvik municipality in Vestfold County, Norway. It is south of the city of Larvik. Currently there are around 3,000 inhabitants in Stavern. It is a small town where tourism is one of the most important sources of income. During summer, the population increases to around 30,000-40,000 people, due to camping sites and cottages around the town centre as well as boats visiting the harbour. Stavern experiences 200 days of sunshine per year. Consequentially, Stavern's population more than doubles during summers. From the mid 1750s until 1864, Stavern was home to the nation's main naval base located in a shipyard in Fredriksvern. Tom Lotherington
Tom Lotherington (born 15 June 1950) is a Norwegian poet, novelist, biographer and translator. He made his literary debut in 1972 with the poetry collection ''Hverdagsfantasier''. He has written the novels ''Den tredje tjeneren'' (1985) and ''Kjødets gjerninger'' (1989), and biographies on the poets Herman Wildenvey and Harald Sverdrup. He was head of The Norwegian Writers' Center from 2001 to 2005.
