Herbert Nathaniel Davis
Herbert Nathaniel Davis (20 December 1867 – 14 March 1900) was an Australian architect responsible for designing a number of the extant heritage buildings in Fremantle, Western Australia. He died at the age of 32, and was interred in the Jewish section of Fremantle Cemetery. Biography Early life Davis was born on 20 December 1867 in Sydney, New South Wales, into a Jewish family. His father Eleazor (or Eleazer) M. Davis, originally from Exeter, England, Exeter, was a businessman, importing and selling a variety of goods from their Bazaar, shop "The Civet Cat" (also known as "The Civet Cat Fancy and General Repository" and "The Civet Cat Fancy Bazaar") at 98 King Street, Sydney, King Street in central Sydney. His mother Frances (Fanny) Matilda Lazarus of London raised Herbert and his elder brother Edward Davis, and suffered a number of miscarriages between the births of the two boys. High Street is the main street running through the City of Fremantle, Western Australia. The street passes by historic landmarks, including the Round House, the Fremantle Town Hall, and the Fremantle War Memorial, through the Fremantle West End Heritage area and through two town squares. Trams operated along High Street for 47 years, between 1905 and 1952. Marich Buildings, Fremantle
The Marich Buildings is a single two-storey building at the corner of Henry Street, Fremantle, Henry and High Street, Fremantle, High Streets in Fremantle, Western Australia, and dates from c1897; there were several single-storey shops on the site including one occupied by butchers Henry Albert & Co. The earliest building recorded on this site is the Royal Hotel in 1844. Prior to 1884 there was a single-storey stone shop/residence on High Street frontage; there was also a stone building of similar vintage constructed fronting onto Henry Street. The site was redeveloped with shops and rooms at the ground floor level and offices on the first floor. The two-storey building is constructed of stone and the upper floor has arched stucco architraves around the windows, stuccoed pilasters and a balustrade parapet. Tolley & Company Warehouse
The Tolley & Company Warehouse, also known as the Tolley Bond Store and the Tolley & Company Building, is a heritage building located at 1 Pakenham Street in the Fremantle West End Heritage area. It dates from the gold rush boom period in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and is of historic significance. The building was constructed in 1897 for Tolley & Co., wine and spirit merchants, who remained in the same building until 1911. The Federation free classical style three storey rendered building includes a half basement below street level. The building façade has a parapet with spherical decorative elements above the engaged pilasters. It features a decorative pediment with pilasters rusticated to the first floor. The name "Tolley & Compy. Limited Merchants" appears in stucco across the alley way entrance to the courtyard at the rear of the building on the right side of the building.
