Cliff Street, Fremantle
Cliff Street is a street in Fremantle, Western Australia. It is the furthest west cross street on High Street, running parallel to Mouat Street. It is also at the south western edge of University of Notre Dame campus buildings. It is part of the Fremantle West End Heritage area, which was established in late 2016. Phillimore Street is a street in Fremantle, Western Australia; it runs between Queen Street, outside the Fremantle railway station and Cliff Street. It is the location of a precinct of archaeological interest as well as being located in the Fremantle West End Heritage area. 7 High Street, Fremantle
7 High Street, Fremantle is a historically significant building in the Fremantle West End Heritage area of Fremantle, Western Australia. It was constructed for the Bank of New South Wales in 1899, during the gold boom of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and when Fremantle was a primary centre of trade and commerce. The building is largely unchanged since that time, and is a good example of Federation Free Classical architecture: a single-storey stone and brick construction, with fine timber features within and an elaborate stucco façade. The building comprises three rooms and a main bank chamber, and is on the corner of Cliff Street. The Bank of NSW operated from the premises until 1926, from which time until the 1950s the building was the office of the Swan Wool Scouring Company of WA. Wilhemsen House, also known as the Elders Building, Elder Building, Barwil House and the Dalgety & Co. Building, is a heritage building located at 11 Cliff Street on the corner of Phillimore Street in the port city of Fremantle, Western Australia. The building dates from the gold rush boom period in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and is of historic significance. Description The building is of Federation Free Classical style, containing French Renaissance elements with a skyline of a tower, gables. turrets and ornamental chimneys. The dominant feature on the skyline is the circular, domed, dragon's scale copper clad, turret. The general layout of the building is a U-shape with the open end of the U facing away from Cliff Street. It rests on a wide foundation of concrete, above which is Melbourne bluestone. Union Bank, Fremantle
The site of 4 High Street was purchased by the Union Bank of Australia in 1881 and for several years the bank operated from the existing building, which had been the residence of Captain Daniel Scott. A new building was erected in 1889 with plans prepared by Melbourne architect William Edward Robertson, the construction was supervised by James Wright. The bank built new premises further along High Street in 1930 and placed the existing building up for auction. It was advertised as having a frontage along High Street and a frontage along Cliff Street. The ground floor of the brick building had a large banking chamber, a manager's office, strongroom, entrance hall, dining room and kitchen. The first floor contained a drawing room, seven bedrooms, bathrooms and linen closet. There were balconies at both the front and rear of the building. McDonald Smith Building
The McDonald Smith Building is a heritage building in the port city of Fremantle, Western Australia. The building dates from the gold rush boom period in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and is of historic significance. Prior to the construction of the current building, the property was the site of a cottage, , constructed by Francis Henry Vincent (1797–1870) a former superintendent at Rottnest. Significant remnants of the limewashed and shingled house still exist at the rear of the main building. The building is a two-storey limestone and brick structure with a rendered facade with stucco ornamentation. It was designed by architect Herbert Nathaniel Davis in the Victorian Classical Revival style, and built in 1895. Hotel Fremantle
Hotel Fremantle located on High Street, Fremantle was built in 1899 for W. deLacy Bacon at the height of the Western Australian gold boom. It was designed by the local architecture firm Wilkinson and Smith. The three storey residential hotel contained bedrooms, public bars, billiard room and sitting room. The design incorporated the existing residential structure built for the previous owner William Dalgety Moore which had been constructed in 1885. Fremantle Customs House
The Old Customs House is a building in Fremantle, Western Australia that was built in 1908 to house the main branch of the Customs Department of Western Australia. It is one of only a handful of extant Customs Houses in the state; others are in Albany, Broome, Cossack, and Geraldton. History It was built on the corner of Cliff Street and Phillimore Streets on the site of the old railway station, a location selected by William Lyne (and recommended by the Fremantle Citizens League). Commissariat Buildings
The Commissariat Buildings are a group of two buildings found at 6 Marine Terrace in the West End of Fremantle, Western Australia, which, with construction having begun in 1852, are one of the first sites built using convict labour in the Swan River colony. Throughout their time in use, they have been used in various capacities by several governmental organisations, until 1979 when they began to hold the Western Australian Maritime Museum's shipwreck galleries, which they continue to do to date. Marine Terrace, Fremantle
Marine Terrace is a road on the southern side of the built up area of Fremantle, Western Australia. It is named for its location alongside the water front. At various stages in its history it has had significant processions along the terrace. The trees that currently line the terrace are not found in early photographs. In 1896 a quarantine station was set up at South Beach, at the end of the road, to process camels shipped in to Western Australia. The camels would arrive at the Long Jetty, be driven along Marine Terrace, and then made to camp at the quarantine site. The animals would later be taken to the Goldfields. It is bound by Esplanade Park on its west side and has the Esplanade Hotel on the east side, along with a number of other heritage listed buildings. Fremantle West End Heritage Area
Fremantle West End Heritage area is a designated heritage precinct in Fremantle, Western Australia. The City of Fremantle nominated the area in 2014 for inclusion in the State Register of Heritage Places to the Heritage Council of Western Australia. The establishment of the area was announced in 2016. The area includes over 250 buildings and covers an area of approximately in the western end of Fremantle. The area is the largest ever addition to the state register. The boundary starts across from the Fremantle Railway Station, at the Phillimore and Market Streets intersection, runs along Market Street to Collie Street, along Marine Terrace to the railway line, and then north, past the intersection (off the Phillimore westernmost roundabout that crosses the railway line) around to the rear of Phillimore street properties, until the railway station.
