Milford, Surrey
Milford is the civil parish and large village which is south west of Godalming in Surrey, England which was a small village in the early medieval period — it grew significantly after the building of the Portsmouth Direct Line which serves Godalming railway station and its own minor stop railway station. The village, served by a wide array of shops and amenities, has to one side an all-directions junction of the A3, one of Britain's trunk roads. Badminton
Badminton is a racquet sport played using racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net. Although it may be played with larger teams, the most common forms of the game are "singles" (with one player per side) and "doubles" (with two players per side). Badminton is often played as a casual outdoor activity in a yard or on a beach; formal games are played on a rectangular indoor court. Points are scored by striking the shuttlecock with the racquet and landing it within the opposing side's half of the court. Each side may only strike the shuttlecock once before it passes over the net. All England Open Badminton Championships
The All England Open Badminton Championships is the world's oldest badminton tournament, held annually in England. With the introduction of the BWF's latest grading system, it was given Super Series status in 2007, upgraded to Super Series Premier status in 2011. The world's first open tournament was held in the English town of Guildford in 1898, the success of which paved the way for the All England's inaugural edition, which was held at London's Horticultural Halls in 1899. Although the inaugural edition consisted of just the doubles format, the singles were introduced from the second edition onward. It was eventually considered – especially after the first Thomas Cup series in 1949 – the unofficial world championship of the sport until 1977, when the International Badminton Federation launched its official championships. The 1901 All England Championships was a badminton tournament held at the Scottish Drill Hall, the headquarters of the London Scottish Rifles at Buckingham Gate, Westminster, London, England from 10–11 April 1901. The men's and women's singles was first to 11 points (for a game) except the final which was first to 15 points. The holder Sydney Smith was defeated in his first match against the eventual winner H. 1902 All England Badminton Championships
The 1902 All England Championships was a badminton tournament held at the Central Transept, The Crystal Palace in Sydenham, London, England, from 18–20 March 1902. Scoring in the singles went back to the first to 15 (for a game) following the previous year when it was 11. There were five rounds in the men's singles but the other events consisted of four rounds. The 1901 edition has been such a success that the Badminton Association put on extra events of a handicap nature. There were 47 entries for men and 49 for women and it was the first time that players from Scotland and Ireland entered. John Stokes & Thomas Good became the first non-English winners of an event although it was not considered one of the five 'Championship events'. However there were only 9 entries for the women's doubles.
