Herbert Friedenwald
Herbert Friedenwald (September 20, 1870 – April 28, 1944) was a Jewish-American librarian and historian. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he graduated from Johns Hopkins University and received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. Friedenwald served as the first superintendent of the Library of Congress manuscript department and was a delegate to the Sixth Zionist Congress in 1903. As one of the founding members of the American Jewish Historical Society, he held various roles and contributed significantly to its publications. He wrote extensively on the early history of the United States, particularly the Continental Congress, and his doctoral thesis on The Declaration of Independence earned him the John Marshall Prize. In 1906, Friedenwald became the first secretary of the American Jewish Committee, where he played a key role in establishing the organization's procedures and in its campaign to abrogate the Russo-American Treaty of 1832. Heritage Microfilm, Inc. (est. 1997) is a preservation microfilm and microfilm digitization business located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. History The company began in 1996 when the microfilm division of Cedar Rapids-based Crest Information Technologies was sold to Christopher Gill. The microfilm division was responsible at the time for preserving newspapers and for microfilming business documents. The business document filming portion of the business was soon dropped in favor of the newspaper microfilming division. Crest in 1999 sold the remaining portion of the company to Lason. In 1999, Heritage Microfilm began digitizing newspaper microfilm and launched NewspaperArchive. ''The Jewish Exponent'' is a weekly community newspaper in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the second-oldest continuously published Jewish newspaper in the United States. History ''The Jewish Exponent'' has been published continuously since April 15, 1887. A predecessor newspaper, ''The Jewish Record,'' had been published since 1875. The paper was founded by 43 prominent Philadelphians—among them Henry Samuel Morais—who pledged that it would be "devoted to the interests of the Jewish people." It was an early supporter of Zionism. In the 1940s, the paper experienced financial difficulties, and on May 5, 1944, it was purchased by real estate magnate Albert M. Greenfield and turned over to the Allied Jewish Appeal, a precursor of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, which still publishes it today via the Jewish Publishing Group. Marriott Wardman Park
The Washington Marriott Wardman Park was a hotel on Connecticut Avenue adjacent to the Woodley Park station of the Washington Metro in the Woodley Park neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The hotel had 1,152 rooms, of event space, and of exhibit space. It opened in 1918 and closed in 2020. The owner filed for bankruptcy in 2021 and the property was sold to Carmel Partners for $152.2 million, with plans for redevelopment. The Wardman Tower wing was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 31, 1984. The Jewish Publication Society (JPS), originally known as the Jewish Publication Society of America, is the oldest nonprofit, nondenominational publisher of Jewish works in English. Founded in Philadelphia in 1888, by reform Rabbi Joseph Krauskopf among others, JPS is especially well known for its English translation of the Hebrew Bible, the JPS Tanakh. The JPS Bible translation is used in Jewish and Christian seminaries, on hundreds of college campuses, in informal adult study settings, in synagogues, and in Jewish day schools and supplementary programs. The ''American Jewish Year Book'' (AJYB) has been published since 1899. Publication was initiated by the Jewish Publication Society (JPS).
