Herbert Carlsson
Knut Herbert "Murren" Karlsson (8 September 1896 – 21 October 1952), better known as Herbert Carlsson, was a Swedish football inside forward born in Gothenburg. He played professionally in both Sweden and the United States. He also earned twenty caps, scoring nineteen goals, with the Swedish national team. Club career After starting his career playing for three local clubs, he joined IFK Göteborg in 1917 and won a Swedish Championship with the club the year after. He became the club's first big star. He emigrated to United States in 1922 where he played in for the New York Vikings in the New York State League. In 1924, he signed with Indiana Flooring in the American Soccer League. In 1927, he joined the Vikings on a tour of Scandinavia. When he returned to the United States, he found that his team had been sold to Charles Stoneham and renamed the New York Nationals. Statistics of American Soccer League in season 1931. Overview At the start of this season the American Soccer League was in decline, suffering from the effects of the Great Depression. Clubs had begun to fold, merge and disappear. The eventual champions, New Bedford Whalers, had been formed by Sam Mark following the merger of Fall River F.C. and New York Yankees. Long time ASL members Brooklyn Wanderers folded before the season. However New York Americans, later to become a perennial contender in the second ASL, made their debut. The season began on February 29, 1931. The first half ended on May 31, 1931. The second half began September 19, 1931, and the season concluded on December 27, 1931. Overview In 1928, a dispute broke out between the American Soccer League and the United States Football Association regarding participation in the National Challenge Cup. The League decided to boycott the cup, but three teams, Bethlehem Steel, the Newark Skeeters and the New York Giants all entered the competition. When the league suspended the three teams, the USFA offered to bankroll the creation of a new league, the Eastern Professional Soccer League. This new league included the three ex-American Soccer League teams, four teams from the Southern New York Football Association and one newly created team, New York Hakoah. By the fall of 1929, the onset of the Great Depression and the competition between the ASL and EPSL had created significant financial problems for both leagues and the USFA. Overview At the beginning of the 1928-29 American Soccer League season, the league initiated a struggle with the United States Football Association. The controversy centered on the National Challenge Cup, but was really about the question of who controlled soccer in the United States, the team owners or the federation bureaucrats. In September 1928, the league announced it was boycotting the Challenge Cup. Three teams decided to defy the league and enter the cup: Bethlehem Steel, Newark Skeeters and New York Giants. By the end of September, the American Soccer League had suspended the three teams. The USFA responded by suspending the ASL, making it an outlaw league according to FIFA rules.
