Henry Jaastad
Henry O. Jaastad (1872–1965) was an influential Tucson, Arizona architect. His firm created over 500 buildings and Jaastad was Mayor of Tucson for 14 years. A number of his works are listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places for their architecture. Personal information Jaastad was born in Norway in 1872. In 1886 – at age 14 – he emigrated to the United States. In 1902, as a skilled journeyman carpenter, he worked on the Willard Hotel, Owl's Club, and Desert Botanical laboratories in Tucson, Arizona. In that same year, Jaastad was able to start his own contractor business where he would design small but remarkable residential buildings for private individuals. He worked in neighborhoods within Armory Park, West University, and North Speedway. In 1904, two years later, Jaastad became a naturalized citizen of the US. Mayor
In many countries, a mayor is the highest-ranking official in a municipal government such as that of a city or a town. Arizona Hotel (Tucson, Arizona)
The Arizona Hotel is a historic two-story building in Tucson, Arizona. It was built in 1917 for Luke G. Radulovich, an investor. With Wells Fargo used to have a branch on the first floor. In the 1970s, the hotel was frequented by prostitutes. The facade was designed by architect Henry O. Jaastad in the Classical Revival style in 1918, and he redesigned it in 1933. Buena Vista Hotel (Safford, Arizona)
The historic Buena Vista Hotel in Safford, Arizona was built in 1928 at cost of $80,000. The 2-story, 46-room hotel was built by Fred and Minta Waughtal, who owned the nearby Olive Hotel, and opened Oct. 15, 1929. It featured swimming pool and two bars; the Tap Room, and the Matador Room, which both featured live music and entertainment, including jazz and country and western music. The hotel closed in 1979 and was damaged in a fire. The building was demolished in 1994. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. It is or was a two-story, by steel frame and stucco building designed by Henry O. Jaastad of Tucson and has been deemed to be the finest example of Mission Revival architecture in Safford. It has a corbeled brick parapet. It is the only hotel in Safford surviving from its historic era. Part of the interior of the building was damaged by fire in 1979.
