Henry E. Dosch
Henry Ernst Dosch (1841–1925) was a German immigrant who served in the American Civil War and later became a successful merchant, horticulturist and author in Portland, Oregon, United States. Dosch served as the Commissioner General and Director of Exhibits for the 1905 Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition, Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition and Oriental Fair in PortlandFrancis, David Rowland. Early life in Germany Dosch was born on June 17, 1841, in Mainz-Kastel, Kastel, Germany and was one of seven children born to Colonel John B. Hillsdale, Oregon
The Hillsdale district is a neighborhood in the southwest section of Portland, Oregon, United States. It is centered on the Hillsdale retail and business area, a series of strip malls on SW Capitol Highway between SW Sunset Boulevard and SW Bertha Boulevard. It is home to the Hillsdale Farmer's Market, which takes place on Sundays during the summer and every other Sunday during the winter. Hillsdale is also home to Oregon's first brewpub, with the opening of McMenamins Hillsdale Brewery in 1985. A cornerstone of the neighborhood is the Hillsdale Library, which opened in 1957. The building closed in 2001 for remodeling, and reopened March 4, 2004. When completed, the library was named a Certified Gold LEED Building. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It was the first LEED building in Portland. As of 2019, the Hillsdale Library is the fifth busiest branch in Multnomah County. History Of Portland, Oregon
The history of the city of Portland, Oregon, began in 1843 when business partners William Overton and Asa Lovejoy filed to claim land on the west bank of the Willamette River in Oregon Country. In 1845 the name of Portland was chosen for this community by coin toss. February 8, 1851, the city was incorporated. Portland has continued to grow in size and population, with the 2010 Census showing 583,776 residents in the city. Early history The land today occupied by Multnomah County, Oregon, was inhabited for centuries by two bands of Upper Chinook Indians. The Multnomah people settled on and around Sauvie Island and the Cascades Indians settled along the Columbia Gorge. These groups fished and traded along the river and gathered berries, wapato and other root vegetables. The nearby Tualatin Plains provided prime hunting grounds.
