Henry Cohen (numismatist)
Henri Cohen (21 April 1806 – 17 May 1880) was a French music theorist, composer, and numismatist of Dutch birth. Career Born in Amsterdam, Cohen moved with his family to Paris at a young age. He studied there with Anton Reicha (music theory and composition), François Lays (singing), and Felice Pellegrini (singing). In 1832–34 and 1838–39 he was active as an opera composer in Naples, with some of his works premiering under the name "Carlo Coen". In 1841 his opera ''Antonio Foscarini'' premiered successfully at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, prompting a revival the following year at the Teatro Regio di Torino. He was thereafter active as music teacher in Paris, including teaching at the Conservatoire de Paris, and was for a time director of the conservatory in Lille. Henry Cohen (rabbi)
Henry Cohen (April 7, 1863 – June 12, 1952) was a British-American rabbi, scholar, community activist and writer who served most of his career at Congregation B'nai Israel in Galveston, Texas, from 1888 to 1949. He came to the United States in 1885, during a period of rapid and massive growth related to early 20th-century immigration from eastern and southern Europe. In Texas, he organized the Galveston Movement, which worked from 1907 to 1914 to attract eastern European Jewish immigrants to Galveston and the Gulf Coast as a destination, as an alternative to the better known Northeastern cities. Ten thousand such immigrants entered at Galveston. When his congregation built a community house in 1928, they named it in his honor. He helped organize and lead many educational and community institutions. Able to read ten languages, he was known as a Talmud scholar, and published books about Texas history and Judaism. Henry Isaac Cohen (21 February 1872 – 20 December 1942) was an Australian barrister and politician. Personal life Isaac Henry Cohen, always known as Henry Isaac, was born in Melbourne to financier David Cohen and Rachael Marks, both of London. On 27 June 1901 he married Ethel Mary Keon of Launceston, Tasmania. Cohen retained Jewish associations but his wife was a Catholic; their three sons and two daughters, who adopted the name Keon-Cohen, were brought up as Anglicans and attended Presbyterian schools. Education Cohen attended St James' Grammar School, the Melbourne Hebrew School and, from 1885, Scotch College where he was dux in 1888 and 1889. Henry Cohen, 1st Baron Cohen Of Birkenhead
Henry Cohen, 1st Baron Cohen of Birkenhead (21 February 1900 – 7 August 1977) was a British physician, doctor and lecturer. He was famous for his Harveian Oration at the Royal College of Physicians in 1970, on the motion of blood in the veins. Cohen was elected to the chair of medicine at the University of Liverpool in 1934. When the Central Health Services Council was formed in 1949, he became its vice-chairman, and chairman in 1957. Knighted in 1949, he was President of the British Medical Association from 1951. After a coronary thrombosis in the following year, Cohen decided to devote his life to the greater work of teaching. He was raised to the peerage as Baron Cohen of Birkenhead, of Birkenhead in the County Palatine of Chester, on 16 June 1956 and was elected President of the General Medical Council in 1961. Henry Cohen (June 5, 1922 – January 14, 1999) was appointed in 1946 the director of Föhrenwald, the third-largest Displaced Persons camp in the American sector of post-World War II Germany. A native of New York City and a child of Jewish immigrants from Lithuania, Cohen was a graduate of City College of New York. During World War II, he served as an infantryman in the U.S. Army. He later served as research director of the New York City Planning Department and as Deputy City Administrator under Mayor Robert F. Wagner, Jr. Later, he was First Deputy Administrator of the New York Human Resources Administration under Mayor John Lindsay. Henry Emanuel Cohen (1 December 1840 – 5 January 1912) was a judge and politician in New South Wales, Australia. Cohen was born in Port Macquarie, New South Wales, the second son of Abraham Cohen of Sydney, and entered as a student at the Middle Temple in October 1868. In 1848 he family moved and in 1855 they moved to Goulburn where Cohen attended private school In 1856 at age 16 he stated to work as a clerk at David Cohen and Company, first in Sydney then moved to West Maitland until he resigned in 1864. He went into business with his twin brother George opened a store in Bathurst until it was closed in 1867. In June 1871 he was called to the English bar, and returned to Sydney, where he was admitted to the local bar.
