Henriette Mayer Van Den Bergh
Henriëtte Mayer-van den Bergh (9 July 1838 – 27 March 1920) was a Belgian museum founder, known for commissioning the building and establishing Museum Mayer van den Bergh, which she curated until her death. She was the daughter of the Antwerp senator Jean Félix Van den Bergh who ran the “La Cloche” brewery with his brother Maximilien.Hotel Mayer-van den Bergh in erfgoed Vlaanderen Henriette married the Cologne businessman Emil Mayer in 1857, who had moved to Antwerp to open a franchise for his family's pharmacy and spice business. Joseph Van Lerius
Joseph Henri François Van Lerius (23 December 1823, Antwerp – 29 February 1876, Mechelen) was a Belgian painter in the Romantic-Historical style. Life Van Lerius was born in Boom, Antwerp, on 23 November 1823. In 1838, he was already an apprentice draftsman at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. From 1839 to 1844, he was a student of Gustave Wappers. He took a study trip through Germany and Italy in 1852. Two years later, he was appointed to a position as a painting instructor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Antwerp). His notable students included Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Aloïs Boudry, Gerard Portielje, Henri Van Dyck and Piet Verhaert. In 1861, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Leopold and in 1869 became a Knight in the Order of St.Michael. In 1875, he was diagnosed with meningitis. Museum Mayer van den Bergh is a museum in Antwerp, Belgium, housing the collection of the art dealer and collector Fritz Mayer van den Bergh (1858-1901). The major works are from the Gothic and Renaissance period in the Netherlands and Belgium, including paintings by Pieter Brueghel the Elder. History Fritz Mayer van den Bergh, born in 1858, collected art for most of his life, making his most expensive and important additions between 1897 and his death in 1901. He was especially interested in art from the 14th to sixteenth century, while his contemporaries considered the Gothic and Renaissance art dated. This fact enabled him to create a collection of 1.000 pieces of mostly Northern Renaissance art. Fritz Mayer Van Den Bergh
Frédéric Henri Godefroid Émile Constantin (Fritz) ridder Mayer van den Bergh (22 April 1858 - 4 May 1901) was a Belgian art collector and art historian. Life Born in Antwerp, he was the eldest son of spice and drug trader Emil Mayer and his wife Henriëtte Isabelle Joanna (1838-1920). Wealthy like her husband (she was bequeathed five castles over the course of her life), Henriëtte was an art collector and daughter to the gin distiller Jean-Felix van den Bergh, who lived in kasteel Maxburg in Meer. Frederik inherited millions of francs on his father's death, investing it in art, including many old master paintings and built up a renowned knowledge of art history, particularly Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Cornelis de Vos, owning five works by the latter artist. He was promoted to the Belgian hereditary nobility in 1888, with the inheritable title of "ridder" (knight), but he died unmarried from a riding accident in Antwerp aged only 43.
