Doelen Hotel Tower
De Doelen is a concert venue and convention centre in Rotterdam, Netherlands. It was originally built in 1934 but then destroyed in 1940 during the German bombardment of Rotterdam in May 1940 at the outset of World War II. It was rebuilt in 1966, originally with one hall to which two more were added in the 1990s. It has a variety of facilities, including the Grote Zaal (Grand Hall), a 2,200-seat concert hall, two smaller halls which each seat about 700 people, and convention rooms. In 2015 it was classified as a Rijksmonument. Although mainly known as a venue for classical music, de Doelen is also a stage for jazz, world music and as the Central Boxoffice for the International Film Festival Rotterdam. It is also the home of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. Joseph Mendes Da Costa
Joseph Mendes da Costa (4 November 1863 – 20 July 1939) was a Dutch sculptor and teacher. Life and work Mendes da Costa was born in Amsterdam to the sculptor Moses Mendes da Costa and Esther Teixeira de Mattos, sister of Henri Teixeira de Mattos and aunt of Joseph Teixeira de Mattos. He was taught by his father who kept a stone workshop where he made building details and gravestones. Later, Costa enrolled at the newly founded Quellinusschool where he studied under Bart van Hove. Rijksakademie Van Beeldende Kunsten
The Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten (State Academy of Fine Arts) was founded in 1870 in Amsterdam. It is a classical academy, a place where philosophers, academics and artists meet to test and exchange ideas and knowledge. The school supports visual artists with a two-year curriculum. The Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten was the home of Amsterdam Impressionism, part of the international impressionist movement, and is known as the School of Allebé by art historians; August Allebé became the school's director in 1880. In French language the school was called "l'Académie Royale des Beaux Arts d'Amsterdam". Among its pioneers here were George Breitner, Jan Toorop, Piet Mondrian, Jacques Witjens and Willem Arnoldus Witsen. August Allebé
August Allebé (19 April 1838 – 10 January 1927) was an artist and teacher from the Northern Netherlands. His early paintings were in a romanticism, romantic style, but in his later work he was an exponent of realism (arts), realism and impressionism. He was a major initiator and promoter of Amsterdam Impressionism, the artist's association St. Lucas, and the movement of the Amsterdamse Joffers. Amsterdam Impressionism – sometimes referred to by art historians as the School of Allebé – was the counterflow to the very strong Hague School in the movement of Dutch Impressionism. As a professor at the Royal Academy of Amsterdam (Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten) he fostered a cosmopolitan attitude toward art and the promotion and motivation of his students, and provided a significant stimulus to developments in modern art. The Quellinusschool or ''Kunstnijverheidsschool Quellinus'', was a school for sculptors in Amsterdam named after the Quellinus family of sculptors, founded in 1877. It was founded as the ''Teekenschool voor Kunstambachten'' (Drawing school for art crafts) by Pierre Cuypers and Eduard Colinet in the workshop of the Rijksmuseum during the building of that institution, which itself contains several large sculptures and was intended to rival the Royal Palace of Amsterdam, which itself is full of works by the Quellinus family. The name was changed after the opening of the museum in 1885 to ''Kunstnijverheidsschool Quellinus'', or simply ''Quellinusschool''.
