Henk Smits
Hendricus "Henk" Smits (born 7 May 1947 in Baarlo, Limburg) is a former road cyclist from the Netherlands. Sporting career Smits began his cycling at the club Olympia Baarlo. In the 1973 International Peace Race, he was part of the team of the Netherlands (with Ewert Diepenveen, Cor Hoogedoom, Piet Legierse, Hermanus Lenferink and Comelius Boersma). In the victory of Ryszard Szurkowski, he finished 41st in the final classification. Smits competed for the Dutch amateur cycling teams Ovis and Hebro-Flandria. Competing as an amateur, Smits raced in the 1973 Tour de Pologne and Course de la Paix; in the 1974 DDR-Rundfahrt; and in the 1976 Milk Race. Achievements Smits was the overall winner at the 1974 Tour de Liège, including one stage victory; and also won the Tour de la Province de Namur the same year. Baarlo
Baarlo (; li, Baolder ) is a village in the southeastern Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Peel en Maas, Limburg, about 6 km southwest of Venlo. Name and symbols The oldest mention of the name Baarlo is from 1219. The oldest certificate of the bank of Baarlo dates from 25 January 1377. In 1629 for the first time it used its own seal. The seal shows the Saint Peter, holding a key in his left hand and in his right hand three ropes carrying a shield, on which a stag is shown jumping to the left. At that time, the local lord, schout or pastor sealed the certificates. History Archeological excavations have shown that at the beginning of our calendar people already had settled in Baarlo. Tour Of Britain
The Tour of Britain is a multi-stage cycling race, conducted on British roads, in which participants race across Great Britain to complete the race in the fastest time. The event dates back to the first British stage races held just after the Second World War. Since then, various different events have been described as the Tour of Britain, including the Milk Race, the Kellogg's Tour of Britain and the PruTour. The current version of the Tour of Britain began in 2004 as part of the UCI Europe Tour. From 2014, the race was rated 2.HC by the UCI. The race became part of the new UCI ProSeries in 2020. Yvoir (; wa, Uwar) is a municipality of Wallonia located in the province of Namur, Belgium. On 1 January 2006 the municipality had 8,450 inhabitants. The total area is 56.84 km2, making it a population density of 149 inhabitants per km2. ''Het Parool'' () is an Amsterdam-based daily newspaper. It was first published on 10 February 1941 as a resistance paper during the German occupation of the Netherlands (1940–1945). In English, its name means ''The Password'' or ''The Motto''. History Second World War The paper was preceded by a stenciled newsletter which was started in May 1940 by Frans Goedhart. In late 1940, Wim van Norden joined the group of producers of the newsletter; Van Norden would later serve as director of the newspaper between 1945 and 1979. Jaap Nunes Vaz also became involved with the newspaper. In 1944, the paper, albeit illegal and vigorously persecuted, reached a circulation of approximately 100,000, and it was distributed by the Dutch resistance. Nordhausen () is a city in Thuringia, Germany. It is the capital of the Nordhausen district and the urban centre of northern Thuringia and the southern Harz region; its population is 42,000. Dessau
Dessau is a town and former municipality in Germany at the confluence of the rivers Mulde and Elbe, in the '' Bundesland'' (Federal State) of Saxony-Anhalt. Since 1 July 2007, it has been part of the newly created municipality of Dessau-Roßlau. Population of Dessau proper: 67,747 (Dec. 2020). Geography Dessau is situated on a floodplain where the Mulde flows into the Elbe. This causes yearly floods.
